been the case. The drill-bit which has an axial hole through-
out its length is secured to the piston within the cylinder, and
at its inner end is in butt contact with the end of a pipe
which is within the piston and reciprocates within an axial
hole bored through the twist-bar of the drill, water being
admitted through a valve in the cylinder end and passing
through the twist-bar, said pipe, and drill-bit. The motive
fluid is admitted to and exhausted from the cylinder by a
reciprocating piston-valve which is operated by the motive
fluid through tappet-valves actuated by the piston.
