Claim.―(1.) A process for producing oxides of nitrogen with aid of a flame of combustible gas or vapour, characterized by the fact that the substantially completely oxidized flame, or portion of the flame, is spread over a surface and air, or a mixture of oxygen and nitrogen is caused to travel over this spread-out flame, at a speed higher than that of the hot gases constituting the flame. [NOTE.-Here follows one other claim.]

No. 30243.―20th February, 1911.†―WILLIAM ALFRED PHILLIPS, of “ Brambledown,” Crouch Hill, Electrical Engineer, and JOHN GEORGE BULTEEL, of 31 Threadneedle Street, Stockbroker, both of London, England. A method of, and apparatus for, obtaining oxides of nitrogen or ozone, or products formed by the action of these gases on other bodies.

Claim.―(1.) The mode of carrying out the process described in specification No. 30242, which consists in causing the flame of burning gas or vapour to impinge upon a mass of pieces of refractory material through which air, or a mixture of oxygen and nitrogen, is caused to travel simultaneously. [NOTE.-Here follow two other claims.]

No. 30256.―26th September, 1911.―EDWIN PHILLIPS, of 264–268 Flinders Street, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, Patent Attorney and Engineer (nominee of the Gesellschaft für Drahtlose Telegraphie m.b.H., of Tempelhofer Ufer 9, Berlin, Germany, Manufacturers, the assignees of Ragnar Hakan Rendahl, of Lilienholm, near Stockholm, Sweden, Engineer). Improvements relating to electric oscillation circuits and their connections.

Claim.―(1.) An arrangement for connecting an electric oscillation circuit with an apparatus substantially consisting of an ohmic resistance, in which arrangement the coupling of the apparatus with the oscillation circuit is effected by means of a transformer which is practically free from dispersion, so that an alteration in the coupling and transmission of energy to the apparatus has, as a consequence, no practically appreciable alteration of the periodicity of the oscillation circuit. [NOTE.-Here follow three other claims.]

No. 30257.―26th September, 1911.―EDWIN PHILLIPS, of 264–268 Flinders Street, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, Patent Attorney and Engineer (nominee of the Gesellschaft für Drahtlose Telegraphie m.b.H., of Tempelhofer Ufer 9, Berlin, Germany, Manufacturers, the assignees of August Leib, of 126 Albrechtstrasse, Tempelhof, near Berlin aforesaid, Engineer, and August Frey, of 3 Jungfernsteg, Nonnendamm, near Berlin aforesaid, Engineer). Improvements relating to connection-changing arrangements for wireless-telegraphy stations.

Claim.―(1.) A switching-apparatus for the stations of wireless telegraphy in which the changing-over from the transmitting to the receiving connections takes place automatically on the release of the telegraphing-key, characterized by the switch mechanism being provided with means adapted to retard the change from the transmitting into the receiving position, but which will exert no retarding influence on the movement of the switch-member from the receiving into the transmitting position, so that during regular telegraphing no return of the apparatus to the receiving position takes place, and telegraphing may also be effected at any desired speed. [NOTE.-Here follow five other claims.]

No. 30259.―27th September, 1911.―HERBERT DENNIS, of Young Street, Machinist; CHARLES GILBERT SHEPPARD and ROBERT OTTO WATTS, of Currie Street, Land Agents, all of Adelaide, South Australia, Australia. An improvement in building-blocks and method of reinforcing buildings.

Extract from Specification.―In carrying our invention into effect we form slabs of building-material suitable for the sides of walls, and we also form certain projections which when used in combination with adjacent blocks constitute vertical pockets for the reception of reinforcement-bars and cement or concrete, thus constituting columns which add considerable strength to the structure. The projections also act as stiffening for internal walls. [NOTE.-The above extract from the specification is inserted in place of the claims.]

No. 30263.―27th September, 1911.―ALBERT CHRISTIAN DIEHL, of 109 S. 34th Street, Camden, New Jersey, United States of America, Machinist. Improvements relating to talking-machines.

Claims.―(1.) A stylus mounting for the sound-boxes of talking-machines, comprising two distanced posts integral with the stylus-bar, tapered so as to have opposite converging surfaces and present an axis of oscillation for the stylus-bar in one and the same line. (2.) A stylus-bar mounting as claimed in claim 1 in which, in addition to the tapering on either side of the axis of oscillation, the posts are further tapered to increase the resiliency of the supports. (3.) A stylus-bar mounting as claimed in claim 1 or 2, provided with a stop to limit the relative movement of the lower and upper portion of the stylus-bar, so that the limit of elasticity of the tapered portions will not be overpassed. [Specification, 6s.]

No. 30264.―27th September, 1911.―ALBERT CHRISTIAN DIEHL, of 109 S. 34th Street, Camden, New Jersey, United States of America, Machinist. Improvements relating to talking-machines.

Claim.―A mounting for the diaphragm of sound-boxes consisting of a unitary annular body of yielding material which in section is externally rectangular on three sides, while the fourth, the inner side, is doubly channelled so as to provide a line-bearing on either side of the diaphragm and at the same time a cushion of sufficient resiliency behind the bearing-edges. [Specification, 4s. 3d.]

No. 30277.―29th September, 1911.―PERCIVAL JAMES GOSSLING, of Willis Street, Wellington, New Zealand, Manager. An improved advertising-method.

Claim.―(1.) The improved method of displaying advertisements whereby the index-letter of certain subject-matter will indicate the position of advertisements, substantially as set forth. [NOTE.-Here follow three other claims.]

No. 30279.―28th September, 1911.―EDWARD HILL BRIDGE, of “ Walcote,” Melbourne Road, Spotswood, Victoria, Australia, Electrician. Improved means of, and apparatus for, recording calls made by telephone.

Extract from Specification.―In carrying the invention into effect I utilize an arrangement of electro-magnets and armatures in two sets, there being in each set a high-resistance coil wound in two halves, the outside winding of one coil being connected to the inside winding of the other coil in series, and vice versa. Means are also provided for registering effective and ineffective calls through suitable switch mechanism. [NOTE.-The above extract from the specification is inserted in place of the claims.]

No. 30285.―29th September, 1911.―INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER COMPANY, a corporation duly organized under the laws of the State of New Jersey, having its principal office at 606 South Michigan Avenue, Chicago, County of Cook, State of Illinois, United States of America (assignees of Edward Arthur Johnston, of 5330 Madison Avenue, and Charles Irving Longenecker, of 1640 Ridgway Avenue, both of Chicago aforesaid, Mechanical Engineers). Internal-combustion engines.

Claim.―(1.) An internal-combustion engine, including, in combination, a power-cylinder and a combustion-chamber, a water-chamber surrounding said cylinder and combustion-chamber, a constant-level feed-cup communicating with said water-chamber and with a source of water-supply, a check-valve located in the passage between said cup and water-chamber and closing against pressure within said chamber, and an eduction-outlet communicating with said water-chamber whereby an intermittent outflow of steam and hot water from, followed by an inflow of colder water into, said water-chamber results during the operation of the engine. [NOTE.-Here follow ten other claims.]
