Agricultural and Pastoral Statistics.—Prescribing the
Manner in which the Account under the Census and
Statistics Act, 1910, shall be taken.—Notice No. 1545.

IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities
conferred upon me by the Census and Statistics Act,
1910, I, Thomas Mackenzie, Minister of Agriculture, here-
by prescribe that the collection of the returns in connec-
tion with the account referred to in section 28 of the said
Act shall be carried out by post or by Sub-Enumerators,
and shall commence on the 20th day of October, and con-
tinue from day to day until the 31st day of the same
month, unless sooner completed.

Te Makarini Scholarships, held at Te Aute College, Hawke’s
Bay.
TWO scholarships of the yearly value of £35, tenable
for two years, are offered for competition. One of
these scholarships, to be called the senior scholarship, is open
to all Maori boys not over sixteen years of age at the end
of the month preceding the date of the examination: the
other, to be called the junior scholarship, is open to all
Maori boys under fourteen years of age at the end of the
month preceding the date of the examination who have
attended a Native school or schools under the control of
the Education Department, and whose attendance at school
during the previous year is considered by the Inspector
of Native Schools to have been satisfactory. The scholar-
ships are open to Maori boys on the conditions laid down
in the regulations of the Trustees of the Te Makarini
Scholarships Fund, as printed in the Appendix to the
Native Schools Code, 1908. The examination will be held
at convenient centres on the 4th and 5th of December, 1911.
Candidates must, either directly or through their teachers,
send notice to the Inspector of Native Schools, Education
Department, Wellington, of their intention to present them-
selves for examination. Such notice must be posted so as
to reach the Department not later than the 25th of October,
1911.
Copies of the regulations and forms of notice may be
obtained from teachers of Native schools and boarding
institutions, the Secretaries to Education Boards, or the
Secretary for Education, Wellington.

Notice of Date of Examinations.—Extension of Time for
receiving Entries.

NOTICE is hereby given that the time for receiving
entries for the teachers’ D and C certificate
examinations of January, 1912, is extended to the 15th
October, 1911, or, with the late fee, to the 31st October,
1911. This extension does not apply to any examinations
other than those for teachers’ D and C certificates.

Town of Rotorua.—Order levying a Hospital rate, 1911–12.
—Notice No. 1546.
WHEREAS by the Rotorua Town Act, 1907, provision
is made for the management of the Town of
Rotorua by the Department of Tourist and Health Resorts,
and the said Department is, in respect of the said town,
created a body corporate :
And whereas by section 5 of the said Act it is enacted
that for the purposes of any Act relating to local authori-
ties the said Department shall, in respect of the said town,
be deemed to be a local authority, and that the provisions
of any such Act shall (subject to such modifications or
exceptions as the Governor by Order in Council directs)
extend and apply as if the said town were a borough :
And whereas by section 80 of the Hospitals and Chari-
table Institutions Act, 1909, and the Sixth Schedule there-
to, it is provided that the said Department shall be deemed
to be a contributory local authority of the Waikato Hospi-
tal District, and that the said Department, for the purpose
of providing funds for the payment of contributions pay-
able to the Waikato Hospital and Charitable Aid Board,
shall have the same power of making, levying, and collect-
ing rates in the Town of Rotorua as if the town were
a borough and the Department were a Council thereof :
And whereas on the 11th day of April, 1908, His Excel-
lency the Governor, in exercise of the powers conferred
in that behalf by the Rotorua Town Act, 1907, did by
Order in Council make certain regulations for the effectual
carrying-out of that Act, which regulations appear in the
New Zealand Gazette of the 16th day of April, 1908 :
And whereas by clause 3 of the said regulations it is
provided that an order or direction in writing, signed by
the General Manager of the said Department, shall be
sufficient in all cases in which (amongst other things) a
resolution or special order of a Council is necessary in a
borough :
Now I, the undersigned, Frederick Sidney Pope, the
General Manager of the said Department, in exercise of
the powers given to local authorities by the Rating Act,
1908, and also in exercise of the powers and authorities
given by the Rotorua Town Act, 1907, and the said regula-
tions, do hereby order, direct, and declare that a rate of
1/7 of a penny in the pound on the capital value of all
rateable property in the Town of Rotorua is hereby made
and levied for the year commencing on the 1st day of
April, 1911, and ending on the 31st day of March, 1912,
and that such rate shall be payable in one sum on the 17th
day of October, 1911.
