Revoking the Gisborne Restricted Limits for Fishing-boats, and defining New Limits in lieu thereof.

In pursuance and exercise of the power and authority conferred upon me by section 189 of the Shipping and Seamen Act, 1908, and of all other powers enabling me in that behalf, I, John Andrew Millar, Minister of Marine, do hereby revoke the Gisborne restricted limits for fishing-boats, which were defined by Warrant dated the nineteenth day of March, one thousand nine hundred and ten, and published in the New Zealand Gazette of the twenty-fourth day of the same month; and I do hereby, in pursuance of the said power and authority, define the Gisborne restricted limits within which extended river fishing-boats may ply to be as follows :—

Between Cape Runaway on the north, and the northern end of Portland Island on the south.

As witness my hand, at Wellington, this thirty-first day of August, one thousand nine hundred and eleven.

East Coast of Australia.—Uncharted Sunken Reef.

The master of the Papuan Government steam-yacht “Merrie England” reports having struck an uncharted sunken reef in the following approximate position :—

Latitude ... ... ... 9° 9′ South.
Longitude ... ... ... 143° 27′ 30″ East.

Charts affected: Nos. 3149 and 2422; “Australia Directory,” Vol. ii.

Victoria.—Re Submerged Wreckage off Point Nepean.

Referring to Notice to Mariners No. 79, dated 18th March, 1911, boatmen and others are warned that operations for the removal of the wreck “Australia” being now in progress, extreme care should be exercised in passing the wreck, as the shots fired may displace portions of the wreck, causing them to be scattered and close to the surface.

Notice to Mariners No. 108 of 1911.

Manawatu River, North Island.—Signals for Foxton Harbour.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 9th September, 1911.

The Foxton Harbour Board have notified that on and after Monday, 18th September, the following local signals will be shown in addition to the general harbour signals for all New Zealand ports, viz. :—

To Vessels in Roadstead bound Inwards: To stand on, and take Bar—

(1.) Steamers, by day: Four balls, two on each yard-arm.
(2.) Sailing-vessels, by day: Four balls, two on each yard-arm, and a red pennant below south yard-arm.
(3.) Steamers, by night: Two red lights, one on each bar beacon.
(4.) Sailing-vessels, by night: Two red lights on front beacon, and one red light on rear beacon.

Steamers and Sailing-vessels to keep to Sea—

By day: General harbour signals.
At night: One green light shown from back beacon.

To Vessels in the River bound Outwards: To stand on, and take Bar—

(1.) Steamers, by day: Blue pennant at mast-head.
(2.) Sailing-vessels, by day: White pennant at mast-head.
(3.) Steamers, by night: Red light showing up river; and when abreast of flagstaff one red light on front beacon and two red lights on rear beacon.
(4.) Sailing-vessels, by night: One red light on back beacon, one red and one white light on front beacon.

Bar dangerous—

By day: Two balls on one yard-arm, and one on the other.
By night: One green light showing up the river, and no light shown on beacon seaward.

Notice to Mariners No. 109 of 1911.

Napier Harbour.

Wellington, N.Z., 9th September, 1911.

Morse Signalling.

The Napier Harbour Board have notified that on and after Monday, 9th October, 1911, the Morse system of night signalling will be installed at Port Ahuriri, and night-signal communications will be made with vessels from the Eastern Pier.

Pania Reef Buoy.

The Board have also notified that on the same date the colour of the Pania Reef buoy will be changed from white to black.

Notice to Mariners No. 110 of 1911.

Hokianga Bar.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 12th September, 1911.

The Harbourmaster at Hokianga reports that the shallow spit to the south of main channel is working to the northward. Soundings taken by local steamers at the latter end of August and early in September show that the south channel has commenced to close up again, and the north channel is deepening and opening out as the main channel similar to last year. The latest soundings show 17 ft. L.W.S. with flagstaff bearing E. by N. ½ N., and only 13 ft. L.W.S. along the line of bearing of flagstaff E. by N. ½ N. where in July this line showed 17 ft.

Gulf St. Vincent.—Port Adelaide River.

Referring to Notice to Mariners No. 22 of 1910, masters of vessels, pilots, and others are hereby informed that the shoaling in the vicinity of Nos. 5 and 6 beacons, Port Adelaide River, has now been removed, and the channel dredged for the full width of the cutting to 23 ft. O.L.W.S. This affects Admiralty Charts 2389B, 1750, and 1752.
