(3.) That absence from illness or accident has not exceeded one week; and
(4.) More generally, that his official duties have been properly performed.
Any or all of the days of absence in excess of the number
of days allowed for intermittent leave or sick-leave may
be deducted from the annual leave of absence granted for
recreation.
3. No officer shall be entitled to claim leave of absence
as a right, and if for any cause the head of the Department thinks such leave ought not to be granted, he may refuse the same in any case, subject to the approval of his
action by the Minister.
4. An officer failing to avail himself of the annual leave provided for will not on that account be entitled to a more lengthened leave in any subsequent year, unless under special circumstances approved by the Minister.
5. Where application for sick-leave for any term extending beyond one week but for less than one month is applied for, it shall be granted only on the certificate of a qualified medical practitioner, to be chosen by the Chief Health Officer or the Minister in charge of the Department in which the applicant is employed.
6. Where the sick-leave applied for exceeds one month there shall be two such certificates.
7. Such certificate shall be in the following form:-
I [We] hereby certify that I [we] have this day examined A. B., of employed on the staff of the [Name of Department]. The said A. B. is suffering from State nature of complaint], and is at present medically unfit to continue his [or her] duties. I [We] anticipate the period of illness which will necessitate absence from duty will be [State time].
8. If any person employed in the public service is absent from duty more than four times in one year, or if in the opinion of the official head of the Department any member of the staff is inefficient through repeated illness, such absences or inefficiency shall be reported to the Minister in charge of the Department, who may order such person to be examined under the provisions of the Public Service Superannuation Act, with a view to retirement from the public service as being medically unfit for further duty.
9. All existing regulations as to leave of absence of officers of the public service not hereinbefore revoked are hereby modified in so far as they are inconsistent with these regulations.
10. These regulations shall apply to all Departments of the public service, except the Government Railways Department.

Opening Settlement Land in Hawke's Bay Land District for Selection.
ISLINGTON, Governor.
IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities conferred upon me by the Land Act, 1908, and the Land for Settlements Act, 1908, I, John Poynder Dickson-Poynder, Baron Islington, the Governor of the Dominion of New Zealand, do hereby declare that the settlement land described in the Schedule hereto shall be open for selection on renewable lease on Friday, the thirteenth day of October, one thousand nine hundred and eleven, at the rental mentioned in the said Schedule; and I do also declare that the said land shall be leased under and subject to the provisions of the said Acts.

Opening Lands in Hawke's Bay Land District for Sale or Selection.
ISLINGTON, Governor.
IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities conferred upon me by the Land Act, 1908, I, John Poynder Dickson-Poynder, Baron Islington, the Governor of the Dominion of New Zealand, having received the report of the Under-Secretary in this behalf, as provided by section one hundred and fifty-four of the said Act, do hereby declare that the lands described in the Schedule hereto shall be open for sale or selection on Thursday, the seventh day of December, one thousand nine hundred and eleven; and also that the lands mentioned in the said Schedule may, at the option of the applicant, be purchased for cash, or be selected for occupation with right of purchase, or on renewable lease; and I do hereby also fix the prices at which the said lands shall be sold, occupied, or leased, as mentioned in the said Schedule hereto, and do declare that the said lands shall be sold, occupied, or leased under and subject to the provisions of the Land Act, 1908.

Situated about three miles from Waikokopu Harbour, and about the same distance from the post-office and school, by road along hard sandy beach. With the exception of about 58 acres at the north-west corner, which is of light sandy nature, the balance consists of low ridges from sea-level to about 350 ft. Soil fairly good, and fairly well grassed.
WAIPAWA COUNTY.-MAKARETU SURVEY DISTRICT.

Situated at South Makaretu, on the lower slopes of the Ruahine ranges. Access is three miles from Ashley-Clinton, and nine miles from Takapau Township and railway-station. From Takapau the road is for the most part a metalled dray-road. Soil is of fair, though light quality, on rock-and-clay formation. Mostly undulating country, a little broken, originally bush, but now in grass, with the exception of a little scrub in the gullies, and fern in northern portion of the section, which can easily be killed out by stocking with cattle. The section is watered by the Mangatewai River.
WOODVILLE COUNTY.-WOODVILLE SURVEY DISTRICT.

Weighted with £94 10s., valuation for fencing and dwelling-house of one room.
Situated half-way between Woodville and Kumeroa, on the main road. Undulating and broken country; soil of medium quality, on clay formation; all grassed. Elevation, from 350 ft. to 500 ft. above sea-level.
