Notice to Mariners No. 84 of 1911.

PORT NICHOLSON.—FALCON SHOAL DREDGED CHANNEL.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 22nd July, 1911.

THE Wellington Harbour Board have notified that a main channel has been dredged through the Falcon Shoal from the southernmost red buoy on the extension of Hope Shoal, south of Ward Island, right across to the blending of the white and red segments of the Somes Island light, giving a width of main channel at this point of 2,000 ft.

It is proposed to move the black and white buoy, with horizontal stripes, which carries a red light, and now marks the western edge of the Falcon Shoal, to a position at the eastern edge of the shoal where the red and white segments of the Somes Island light blend. This position is about 8 cables distant from the Karaka Bay Wharf, and bears N. 89° E. from it.

Directions re entering Port Nicholson.

Direction by Day.—In entering Port Nicholson from about 3½ cables off Pencarrow Head steer northward through the main entrance midway between Barret Reef and the head, with Somes Island Lighthouse bearing N. 6° W. Keep the lighthouse on this bearing until the northern end of Ward Island bears N.E., then steer north-westward and round Point Halswell to the anchorage.

The red buoy on the eastern shore south extreme of Hope Shoal marks the edge of the shallow water on that side of the channel.

At Night.—From about 3½ cables off Pencarrow Head steer into the port with Somes Island light bearing between N. 4½° W. and N. 7½° W., in which sector the light is white, not changing the light to red on the western side of the channel; or, after passing Pencarrow Point on which the low-level light is situated, a course may be taken by keeping in the blending of the white and green lights of Somes Island Lighthouse N. 8° W.

This course leads through the deepest water in the main channel, with ample room on each side. When the two red fixed lights on Queen’s Wharf open well off Halswell point bearing W.S.W. steer about west, passing northward of Jerningham Point buoy, and anchoring midway in a line with this buoy and Kaiwarra in about 11 fathoms of water.

Proposed alteration in Position of Anchorages.

It is proposed to alter the position of the Inner and Outer Anchorages, the Health Officer’s Examination Ground, and the Explosives Anchorage as follows:—

Outer Anchorage to be bounded by a line drawn from Jerningham Point N. 22° W. to the opposite shore.

Inner Anchorage to be bounded by a line starting from the east end of Oriental Bay 2,000 ft. inside of Jerningham Point in a direction N. 32° W. to the opposite shore.

Health Officer’s Examination Ground will be an area formed by a square of 1,850 ft. on the end of a line drawn N. 39° E. from the General Post Office, the outer corner of the square starting in a S. 51° E. direction from the intersection of the first-named line with the outer anchorage boundary-line, drawn N. 22° W. from Jerningham Point.

The Explosives Anchorage Ground to be an area forming a parallelogram running N. 39° E. 2,500 ft. and S. 51° E. 1,230 ft., the centre of the area being at the intersection of lines drawn N. 28° E. from the General Post Office and N. 22° W. from Jerningham Point.

All bearings magnetic.

Further notice will be given before the above-mentioned proposed changes are made.
