Since the installation of the new lt. it has been found that the lt. remains vis. in the sectors where it should be obsc., but shows considerably fainter in these sectors than elsewhere. AUCKLAND HARBOUR.—EXPLOSIVES ANCHORAGE FOR VESSELS.

WITH reference to Notice to Mariners No. 65 of 1911 issued by this Department, the Auckland Harbour Board notifies that the old explosives anchorage described in that notice—that is, the anchorage which is between lines drawn from Hobson Point to Cook Point and 1,000 ft. eastward and parallel to a line drawn from Resolution Point to Depot Point—will continue in use until the 1st January, 1912, instead of the anchorages described in Notices Nos. 40 and 45.

Rules for the Examination of Masters of Sailing-ships plying in Harbours and Rivers.

WHEREAS by Warrant dated the 29th day of July, 1910, and published in the New Zealand Gazette No. 74, of the 2nd day of August following, rules were made for the examination of candidates for certificates of competency as masters and mates: And whereas it is desirable to make additional regulations:
Now, therefore, in pursuance and exercise of the power and authority conferred upon me by section 23 of the Shipping and Seamen Act, 1908, and of all other powers and authorities enabling me in that behalf, I do hereby make the following regulations for the examination of candidates for certificates of competency as master of sailing-ships plying in harbours and rivers, and do hereby order that they shall be embodied in and read with the said regulations of the 29th day of July, 1910.

REGULATIONS.

CANDIDATES for examination as master of sailing-ships in harbours or rivers must make a proper application on a form which will be supplied on application at any Mercantile Marine Office. The application, accompanied with the necessary testimonials, must be lodged at the Mercantile Marine Office for delivery to the examiners. Certificates procured on false information will be cancelled.

Candidates for certificates must pass the three sight-tests mentioned in the regulations relating to the examination of masters and mates.

A master of a sailing-ship in harbours or rivers must be twenty-one years of age, and must have served at least one year at sea or on board of a vessel plying within harbours or river limits. He must produce satisfactory testimonials of good conduct and sobriety. He must be able to read and write and understand the first five rules of arithmetic. He must understand the rules of the road as regards both steamers and sailing-ships, their regulation lights and fog and sound signals, and the local harbour regulations. He must understand how to act for the safety of the ship if caught in a sudden squall, and what action to take if a man falls overboard; also any other questions of a like nature appertaining to the duties of the master of this class of ship.

Notice of Resolution recommending Withdrawal of Land from the Operations of the Kauri-gum Industry Act, 1908, and its Amendments.
NOTICE is hereby given, by direction of His Excellency the Governor in Council, acting under the powers and authorities conferred upon him by section 33 of the Kauri-gum Industry Act, 1908, and section 9 of the Kauri-gum Industry Amendment Act, 1910, that a resolution has been passed by the Auckland Land Board certifying that to the best of their knowledge and belief the portion of Te Mata Kauri-gum Reserve Extension No. 2 described in Part I of the Schedule hereto, and also the portion of Poroti Kauri-gum Reserve described in Part II of the said Schedule, are no longer required for the purpose of gum-digging, and recommending the Governor to issue an Order in Council declaring the said areas to be no longer subject to the Kauri-gum Industry Act, 1908. Any objections to this proposal in respect of either of the said areas must be sent to His Excellency the Governor within two months from the date hereof.

ALL that area in the Auckland Land District, containing by admeasurement 57 acres and 9 perches, more or less, being Section 26 and part Section 15, Block VI, Hukerenui Survey District, and forming part of Te Mata Kauri-gum Reserve Extension No. 2, set apart by Order in Council dated 21st August, 1899, and published in Gazette of 24th August, 1899, page 1556. Bounded towards the north-east generally by a public road, 212·4, 831·5, 706·5, and 721·4 links; towards the east by Section 24, Block VI, Hukerenui Survey District, 2228·1 links; towards the south by part Section 15 and Section 32 of Block VI aforesaid, 2268·8 links; and towards the west by Section 23, Block VI aforesaid, 2781·6 links: be all the aforesaid linkages more or less: as the same is delineated on the plan marked L. 5525/3, deposited in the Head Office, De-
