Notice to Mariners No. 24 of 1911.

THREE KINGS ISLANDS INCORRECTLY CHARTED.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 20th February, 1911.

ADMIRAL Sir Richard Poore, R.N., Commander-in-Chief on the Australian Station, reports that the position as ascertained by sights of the south point of the Great Island of the Three Kings, north-west of New Zealand, is latitude 34° 11′ 48″ S., longitude 172° 7′ 24″ E., and the relative bearing from Cape Reinga of south point Great Island N. 60° W. true 31 miles.

The position of south point as at present charted is latitude 34° 9′ S., longitude 172° 8′ 8″ E., and the bearing from Cape Reinga N. 58½° W. 31·8 miles.

Notice to Mariners No. 26 of 1911.

AUCKLAND HARBOUR.—KAIPARA SHOAL.

Wellington, N.Z., 20th February, 1911.

REFERRING to Notice to Mariners No. 57 of 1910, the Auckland Harbour Board have notified that the removal of rock from Kaipara Shoal is now completed. The Board’s diver has examined the bottom carefully on several occasions, and reports that all rock has been lifted. The buoy which marked the shoal will not be removed until survey now being made by Lieut. Jackson, R.N., is complete.

NORTH COAST OF AUSTRALIA.

Reported Reef, Clarence Strait.

THE commander of the Royal Dutch packet s.s. “Van Waerwyck” reports the discovery of a small reef in Clarence Strait in the following position:—

N.E. point of S.W. Vernon Island … S. 53° E.
W. … S. 19° W.

Bearings given are magnetic. The reef is almost dry at low water, spring tides.

Notice to Mariners No. 29 of 1911.

ROCK OFF S.W. CAPE, STEWART ISLAND.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 24th February, 1911.

REFERRING to Notice to Mariners No. 145 of 1910, Captain Bollons, of the Government steamer “Hinemoa,” reports that he surveyed the rock off Evening Island on the 8th instant. It is 250 ft. in extent N.E. and S.W., and 100 ft. N.W. and S.E., and is not marked by kelp. There is 9 ft. of water over the shallowest part at low water, spring tides. The ebb stream runs to the S.W. over the rock at the rate of 2 to 4 knots. The rock is situated 5 cables S. 88° E. of the south end of Evening Island, and the following marks and bearings were taken to determine its position.

East ext. of Long Island in line with the high bluff of Weather Point N. 11° E.

Murphy Islet open one-third of its own length clear of the south cape of Stewart Island N. 87° E.

The south and S.W. capes in line N. 87° E. clear the rock.

Bearings are correct magnetic

Notice to Mariners No. 28 of 1911.

AUCKLAND HARBOUR SIGNALS REVISED.

Wellington, N.Z., 23rd February, 1911.

THE Auckland Harbour Board have notified that the flag signals which are made from the masthead of the Harbour Board flagstaff, and published on page 178 of the “New Zealand Nautical Almanac” of 1911, will be cancelled on and after 1st April, 1911, and in lieu thereof the undermentioned flag signals will be used.

The coloured flags, parallelograms, and cones shown on pages facing 178 will be retained, with the exception of Nos. 7, 10, 11, and 12.
