Notice to Mariners No. 157 of 1911.
NEWLY DETERMINED POSITION OF WEST ISLAND OF THREE KINGS.
Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 16th December, 1911.
LIEUTENANT Harry Pennell, R.N., commanding the British Antarctic Expedition R.Y.S. “Terra Nova,” who has lately been surveying and taking soundings round the Three Kings Islands, reports as follows:—
“The true bearings taken from stations (Hiriki, Maria Lighthouse, Unuwhao) on the mainland to the Three Kings Group to check the accuracy of Lieutenant Smythe’s observations agree very closely with his position, and in view of the fact that the angles between the extreme bearings is so small Lieutenant Smythe’s astronomical position should be taken as the correct one.
“West Island summit is situated S. 71° W., 5·69′ from the depot on Great King—i.e., its position as charted relatively to the Great King is correct, which makes its position,—
34° 11′ 2″ S.
172° 2′ 32″ E.
“By reference to the chart prepared by Lieutenant Rennick it will be seen that the contour of all the islands in the group is charted considerably in error on the Admiralty Chart, and the position of the S.W. King (marked 600 ft. on the Admiralty Chart) is in reality further north relatively to the other islands of the group than the position shown, while the height of West Island is nearly twice that originally assigned to it.”
The chart referred to has been sent to the Hydrographer of the British Admiralty, and when published will no doubt be a great relief to shipmasters who are navigating this coast in thick or foggy weather.
Charts, &c., affected: Admiralty Charts Nos. 2525 and 1212; “New Zealand Pilot,” eighth edition, 1908, Chapter ii, page 31; “New Zealand Nautical Almanac,” 1912, page 319.

HOKIANGA BAR.
Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 19th December, 1911.
REFERRING to Notice to Mariners No. 153 of 1911, the Harbourmaster at Hokianga reports re the bar that the North Channel has apparently reached its furthermost limit in a northerly direction, and is now losing the full effects of the scour of river; it has become very patchy in places, carrying 12 ft. and 13 ft. L.W.S.
The old South Channel (flagstaff bearing about N.E.) has opened out as the Main Channel at present, and is carrying 17 ft. L.W.S. This channel is the working one in the meanwhile.
The old Main Channel (flagstaff bearing about E. by N. ¼ N.) appeared to be about dry at L.W. during the latter end of November, 1911.
Charts, &c., affected: Admiralty Charts Nos. 2525 and 1091A; “New Zealand Pilot,” eighth edition, 1908, Chapter viii, page 201; “New Zealand Nautical Almanac,” 1912, page, 333, and plan facing page 332.
