Commissions in the British Army.—Amendments to Regulations.

THE following amendments made by Army Order No. 228, of 1st September, 1910, to the regulations under which commissions in the British Army may be obtained by officers of colonial military forces, issued with Army Orders dated 1st July, 1907, are republished for general information.

REGULATIONS UNDER WHICH COMMISSIONS IN THE BRITISH ARMY MAY BE OBTAINED BY OFFICERS OF COLONIAL MILITARY FORCES.
Amendments.
THE following amendments will be made to paragraph 12:—

On page 6: In line 10 of subparagraph (c), below “Wales” add “A university in the Commonwealth of Australia.” In line 12 of subparagraph (c), after “Aberdeen” insert “or at a university in the Commonwealth of Australia.”

On page 7: After line 29 add “Universities in the Commonwealth of Australia. The Junior or the Senior Public Examination, provided that the candidate has passed in—
(1) English,
(2) English History,
(3) Geography,
(4) Arithmetic,
(5) Algebra,
(6) Geometry,
and two of the following subjects:—
(7) Physics or Chemistry,
(8) French or German,
(9) Latin or Greek.”
In lines 34 and 35, for “one of the chartered colonial universities” substitute “any other university in the overseas dominions.”
After line 36 insert a new subparagraph,—
“(d.) If he has passed one of the following examinations:—
(i.) The educational examination for admission to the Permanent Force of the Commonwealth of Australia.
(ii.) The examination for the Professional Division of the Public Service of the Commonwealth of Australia.
(iii.) The examination for admission to the Royal Military College, Kingston, Canada.”
In line 41, after “(c)” insert “or (d).”

NOTICE TO MARINERS.
WESTERN AUSTRALIA.—NORTH-WEST COAST.
Final Notice.
It is hereby notified that on or about the 15th of October, 1910, a second-order dioptric white light, flashing every five seconds thus,—
Flash one-third of a second, eclipse four and two-thirds seconds,
will be exhibited from a masonry tower of a natural gray colour, 73 ft. in height from base to vane, erected on Cloates Hill. Lat. 22° 42′ south, long. 113° 42′ east; range of visibility, 21 miles.
Chart affected: No. 1055, Redout Island to Cape Cuvier.

AFRICA.
SOUTH-EAST COAST.—EAST LONDON.—LIGHT EXHIBITED.—A fixed green electric light, 41 ft. above high water, and visible 2 miles, is exhibited from an openwork iron column on the outer end of the north pier at East London, south-east coast of Africa, 350 yards north-eastward of Castle Point light.
Approx. position: Lat. 33° 1′ 40″ S., long. 27° 55′ 12″ E.
AUSTRALIA.
WEST COAST.—ROTTNEST ISLAND.—SHOAL TO EASTWARD EXTENDING.—Information has been received that the bank eastward of Rottnest Island, in the approach to Fremantle, west coast of Australia, has extended to the eastward. Depths of 4¾ fathoms have been found 5 miles 90° and 5¼ miles 93° from the beacon on Point Phillip, the eastern point of Rottnest Island. An isolated head, covered with 4¾ fathoms, lies 600 yards 115° from the last-mentioned depth.
Approximate position of Rottnest Island light: Latitude 32° 0′ 20″ S., longitude 115° 31′ 5″ E.
CHILE.
TIERRA DEL FUEGO.—WOLLASTON ISLANDS.—WASHINGTON CHANNEL.—ROCK.—The commander of the Argentine cruiser “Almirante Brown” reports, under date of 9th July, 1910, that a submerged rock, unmarked by kelp, on which his vessel struck, lies in the middle of Washington Channel, between Wollaston and Bayly Islands, Cape Horn group, on the following bearings:—
Iron Cape, tangent, 28° 30′.
Bayly Island, 1,132 ft. summit, 295°, distant 1,933 yards.
Approx. position: Lat. 55° 39′ 10″ S., long. 67° 33′ W.
CEYLON.
WEST COAST.—COLOMBO HARBOUR NORTH ENTRANCE.—SEARCHLIGHTS.—CAUTION.—Information has been received that electric searchlights are sometimes exhibited from the outer end of the north-east breakwater at Colombo Harbour north entrance, Ceylon. The exhibition of these lights may make navigation difficult, and mariners should exercise particular care in making the port when these searchlights are in use.
Approx. position: Lat. 6° 57′ 30″ N., long. 79° 51′ 15″ E.
BRITISH COLUMBIA.
VANCOUVER ISLAND.—WEST COAST.—CLAYOQUOT SOUND.—VILLAGE CHANNEL.—STOCKHAM ISLAND.—BEACON ESTABLISHED.—A concrete beacon has been established by the Government of Canada on the rock which dries 5 ft., off Stockham Island, in the eastern end of Village Channel, Clayoquot Sound, west coast of Vancouver Island.
The beacon is square in plan, has the natural gray colour of the concrete, and rises 5 ft. above high-water mark. The concrete is surmounted by a wooden topmark, consisting of a latticework ball 6 ft. in diameter, the whole showing 10 ft. above the concrete, and painted red.
Approx. position: Lat. 49° 10′ 6″ N., long. 125° 54′ 40″ W.
VANCOUVER ISLAND.—WEST COAST.—NOOTKA SOUND.—FRIENDLY COVE.—INTENDED LIGHT.—The Canadian Government has given notice that at an early date a lighthouse will be erected on the middle and largest of the San Miguel Islands, at the entrance to Friendly Cove, Nootka Sound, west coast of Vancouver Island.
