Bonus for the Production of Quicksilver.

Wellington, 14th February, 1910.
NOTICE is hereby given that a bonus of fourpence (4d.) per pound will be paid on the production of the first one hundred thousand pounds weight (100,000 lb.) of good marketable retorted quicksilver, free from all impurities, from any mine in New Zealand, on the following conditions, that is to say:—

That at least one-third of the quantity is produced on or before the 31st March, 1911, and the remaining two-thirds on or before the 31st March, 1912.

No bonus will be payable until the whole of the one hundred thousand pounds (100,000 lb.) of quicksilver has been produced as stipulated to the satisfaction of an officer to be appointed by the Minister of Mines, and on whose certificate alone the bonus will be paid.

In the event of more than one person producing the required quantities of quicksilver before the dates named, inquiry will be made by the officer above referred to, when, if it is found that each applicant is equally entitled to a bonus, the amount will be divided in proportion to the quantities produced by each applicant, but in no case shall any bonus be paid until at least one hundred thousand pounds (100,000 lb.) of quicksilver has been produced in the aggregate.

Suspension of Surveyor’s License.

IT is hereby notified for general information that the Surveyors’ Board, acting under the authority conferred by the Surveyors’ Institute and Board of Examiners Act, 1908, has suspended the license of
Mr. GEORGE WHITCOMBE, Licensed Surveyor, Kawhia,
for a period of two years, from 21st September, 1910, to 20th September, 1912, inclusive; the said Mr. G. Whitcombe having been adjudged guilty of committing offences as specified in subsections (1) (a) and (1) (b) of section 16 of the said Act.

Te Makarini Scholarships, held at Te Aute College, Hawke’s Bay.
THREE scholarships of the yearly value of £35, tenable for two years, are offered for competition. One of these scholarships, to be called the senior scholarship, is open to all Maori boys not over sixteen years of age at the end of the month preceding the date of the examination: the other two scholarships are junior scholarships, one of which is open to all Maori boys under fourteen years of age at the end of the month preceding the date of the examination who have attended a Native school or schools under the control of the Education Department, and whose attendance at school during the previous year is considered by the Inspector of Native Schools to have been satisfactory; the other is open on similar conditions to Maori boys whose attendance at any school other than Te Aute and St. Stephen’s during the previous year has been satisfactory. The scholarships are open to Maori boys on the conditions laid down in the regulations of the Trustees of the Te Makarini Scholarships Fund, as printed in the Appendix to the Native Schools Code, 1908, and in amended regulations thereto, as contained in the Department’s circular memorandum of 25th April, 1910. The examination will be held at convenient centres on the 5th and 6th of December, 1910. Candidates must, either directly or through their teachers, send notice to the Inspector of Native Schools, Education Department, Wellington, of their intention to present themselves for examination. Such notice must be posted so as to reach the Department not later than the 26th of October, 1910.
Copies of the regulations and forms of notice may be obtained from teachers of Native schools and boarding institutions, the Secretaries to Education Boards, or the Secretary for Education, Wellington.

Notice of Date of Examinations.

NOTICE is hereby given that a Civil Service Junior Examination will be held in November, 1910, beginning on or about the 19th day of the month; that a Junior National Scholarship and Junior Free Place Examination will be held on or about the 1st and 2nd days of December, 1910; and that a Civil Service Senior Examination and an examination for teachers’ certificates of Class C and Class D will be held in January, 1911, beginning on or about the 5th day of the month.
With the Civil Service Junior Examination will be taken the Intermediate Examination, being the Special Examination for senior free places in secondary schools and district high schools and the First Examination of pupil-teachers.
With the Junior National Scholarship Examination will be taken the Junior Free Place Examination (including the examination for junior free places in technical schools).
Entries for Junior National Scholarships, Junior Free Places, and the First Examination of pupil-teachers must be made through the principals or head teachers of the schools attended, and will be received by Secretaries of Education Boards not later than the 15th September, 1910.
Entries for the Civil Service Junior Examination and Special Examination for Senior Free Places will be received by the Inspector-General of Schools, at Wellington, until the 15th September, 1910, or, with a late fee of £1, until the 22nd September, 1910.
Entries for the January examinations will be received by the Inspector-General of Schools, at Wellington, until the 30th September, 1910, or, with a late fee of £1 in addition to the ordinary fee, until the 15th October, 1910.
All entries must be made on the proper forms, which may be obtained later from the office of any Education Board or of the Education Department.
Special attention is drawn to alterations in date for the receipt of applications.
