RIVER MURRAY.—MURRAY BRIDGE.
MASTERS of vessels and others trading on the River Murray are informed that a bright light is now exhibited between sunset and sunrise from beneath the decking of the second span (western end) of the Murray Bridge. The lamp is suspended in the middle of the span on the up-stream side, and shows both up and down stream.

WHANGAREI HARBOUR.—CHANGE IN CHARACTER OF HARBOUR LIGHT.

THE Whangarei Harbour Board has notified that on and after 1st September, 1910, the fixed white light on beacon No. 2 of Single Tree Point will be dispensed with, and a white flash light substituted. Duration of light 1 second, obscured 10 seconds. The light will be an acetone light, and should be visible, except when obscured by the land, for a distance of about seven miles.

By-laws regulating Traffic on Portions of the Ohura Road.

IN pursuance and in exercise of the powers conferred upon me by section 139 of the Public Works Act, 1908, I, Roderick McKenzie, the Minister of Public Works, do, in respect of those portions of the Ohura Road as are described in the Schedule hereto, which were declared to be a Government road by an Order in Council dated the 1st day of June, 1910, and published in the New Zealand Gazette of the 9th day of June, 1910, page 1683, hereby make the following by-laws:—

  1. The use of bullocks as traction animals on the said portions of road is prohibited for the period from 1st May to 1st November in any year.
  2. The haulage or transportation on the said portions of road of any vehicle, engine, or machine coming under the definition of “heavy traffic” within the meaning of paragraph (a) of subsection (1) of section 139 of the Public Works Act, 1908, during the months of May, June, July, August, and September in any year shall cease.
    “Heavy traffic” is defined in the section above referred to to be the transportation of any vehicle, engine, or machine which itself, or together with any thing or things being transported thereon, weighs more than one and a half tons avoirdupois to each pair of wheels.
  3. The width of tires of all vehicles upon the said portions of road, whether plying for hire or not, shall bear the following proportion to the number of animals employed to draw the same, that is to say:—

No more than eight bullocks shall be used at any one time as traction animals to any vehicle having two wheels, nor more than twelve bullocks as traction animals to any vehicle having four wheels.
4. I do hereby prescribe that the weight of timber carried on any vehicle subject to these by-laws shall be ascertained by measurement at the rate of 600 sup. ft. of timber to the ton weight avoirdupois; and I do further prescribe that the manner of ascertaining the weight of the following articles shall be by computation according to the following scale:—
Wheat, 12 bags of 3⅓ bushels to one ton weight avoirdupois.
Barley, 12 bags of 4 bushels to one ton weight avoirdupois.
Oats, 14 bags of 4 bushels to one ton weight avoirdupois.
5. The driver of any vehicle or machine shall, at the verbal request of any person authorized by me, stop such vehicle or machine, and shall give such information as to the load thereon or contents thereof and as to the quantity, weight, size, or measurement of same, as such person shall require for the purpose of ascertaining such quantity, weight, size, or measurement.
6. If any person commits a breach of any of the foregoing by-laws he shall be liable, upon conviction for such breach, to a penalty of £5, provided that the Court before which proceedings may be taken in respect of such breach may, if it thinks fit, impose such lower penalty as it thinks adequate to the particular case.

SCHEDULE.
THOSE portions of the Government road known as the Ohura Main Road, described as follows, namely:—
Firstly, that portion extending from a point on the said road at Kawakawa to a point about 20 chains north-east of its junction with Waitehena Road, being a distance of 25 miles 29 chains, more or less, from Kawakawa.
Secondly, that further portion of the said road from a point about one mile south of the Town of Mangaroa, about 28 miles 14 chains from Kawakawa, to a point about half a mile north of the junction of the said Ohura Road with the Marco Road, being 44 miles 19 chains, more or less, from the centre of Broadway, Stratford.
Thirdly, that remaining portion of the said road from a point about two miles south of the Whangamomona Township, at 38 miles 6 chains from the centre of Broadway, Stratford, to a point about two miles and a half south of its junction with the road known as Junction Road, being 26 miles 68 chains from the centre of Broadway, Stratford.
As the said portions of road are more particularly delineated on the plan marked P.W.D. 26713, a copy of which plan is deposited in the Public Works Office, at Stratford, in the Taranaki Land District, and thereon shown in red colour.

Notice of the Taking and Laying-off of Roads in Blocks IV, Manganui, and IV, Makotuku Survey Districts.

NOTICE is hereby given, by direction of His Excellency the Governor of the Dominion of New Zealand, under authority of section 93 of the Public Works Act, 1908, that the roads described in the Schedule hereto were, on the 12th day of July, 1910, duly taken and laid off through the lands specified in the said Schedule, under the authority of the Governor of the said Dominion, by Warrant dated the 18th day of January, 1910.
