Notices to Mariners and Road Taking

July 21.] THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE. 2017

directions for its use are as follows: When crossing from
seaward the square beacons on Hook Point must be kept
open twice their own width to the northward until the
triangular beacons on Inskip Point are open four times
their width to the westward, when steer for them, keeping
them so until the line of leads for the South Channel is
passed; when haul out and bring them into line; then pro-
ceed as formerly.

SOUTH CHANNEL.—This channel carries a depth of
13 ft. 6 in. at L.W.O.S., but as it is inclined to work to
the northward the line should be slightly opened in that
direction. It has been decided to substitute, from and
after the 12th July, a white light in lieu of the red light
at present shown.

Strangers are warned not to use these channels without
the services of a pilot, and masters of vessels are cautioned
against their use except in fine weather and at about the
time of high water.

tory, Vol. II.

CHINA.

EAST COAST.—CHANGE IN FOG-GUN SIGNALS.—The Chinese
Government has given notice that on and after the under-men-
tioned dates the responding fog-gun signals from light-stations
on the east coast stations of China will be altered as described
in the following instructions to light-keepers:—

“ The keeper on hearing a bell, fog-horn, steam whistle, or
siren, or any other sound, during thick or foggy weather,
which shall indicate the proximity of a vessel, will imme-
diately fire one gun, and after a lapse of 5 minutes will fire
two guns, with the station’s distinguishing interval between
them; and this distinguishing signal of two guns will be
repeated every 5 minutes if the vessel’s fog-signal, showing
that she is under way, continues to be heard.”

The distinguishing intervals of the several light-stations
and the dates on which the change will be effected are as
follow:—
