THE following extracts from Notices to Mariners,
received from the Board of Trade, London, are
published for general information.

AFRICA.

Pt. DANGER Lt.—About 15th March, 1910, this gp. fl. white
lt. (34° 37¼' S., 19° 18' E.) was to be increased in power,
showing a gp. of 3 fls. every 40 secs.—fl. 2½ secs., ecl. 3⅜ secs.,
fl. 2½ secs., ecl. 3⅜ secs., fl. 2½ secs., ecl. 25⅜ secs. May.

Cape Agulhas Lt.—On 1st March, 1910, this F. white lt.
(34° 49½' S., 20° 0½' E.) was to be replaced by a fl. white lt.
every 3 secs. — fl. ½ sec., ecl. 2½ secs. — elev. 128 ft.
R. 18 miles. May.

Port Natal.—The S. breakwater Lt.-h. (29° 52¼' S.,
31° 4' E.) has been destroyed. A temp. F. white lt. is exh.
close to the site of the lt.-h., but must not be relied on in
bad weather. May.

INDIAN OCEAN.

Ceylon.—Colombo.—The bell buoy, black and white cheq.,
in 6° 57½' N., 79° 50½' E., in wzn. entr. to harb., marking
head of S.W. breakwater extension, has been replaced by a
brown lt. buoy, exh. an occ, red lt. every 10 secs. The occ.
green leading lt., near the inner end of the Slipway, is not to
be disc. until further notice. May.

Basssnin River Entr.—A F. white lt., elev. 115 ft.,
R. 9 miles, is exh. from the white flagstaff (15° 51½' N.,
94° 16½' E.) on Diamond Isl.

Rangoon River.—1. Leading beacons est. — (a) Front
beacon, a post surm. by a diamond, on Syriam pt., 290 yds.
N. 14° E. from the outer end of Oil pier. (b) Rear beacon,
similar to, and 215 yds. S. 79° E. from the front beacon.
These beacons in line, S. 73° E., lead through the ern. part
of Monkey pt. dredged chan. in a least depth of 13 ft.
2. Beacons disc.—The red beacons on river-bank, about one
mile srd. from Syriam pt. 3. Buoy withdrawn—Upper
Hastings buoy (black conical), prev. on nrn. edge of Hastings
shoal. Pazundaung buoy, about four cables erd. from
Monkey pt. (16° 46' N., 96° 11½' E.), is surm. by a triangle.
May.

EASTERN ARCHIPELAGO, ETC.

Penang Harb. Approach.—In April, 1910, the red conical
buoy No. 9, in 5° 12½' N., 100° 15' E., in the S. chan., two
miles S. 55° W. from Pulo Rimau Lt-h., is to be withdrawn;
and No. 10 buoy is to be renumbered No. 9, and
moved to 5° 12½' N., 100° 16' E., on the edge of the 3-fm.
bank, 1½ miles S. 24° W. from Pulo Rimau Lt.-h. May.

Banka Strait.—Sungi Sunsang (Palembang) Lt.-V.—The
lt. of the Pilot Lt.-V. (2° 11½' S., 104° 57' E.), entr. to
Palembang River, is to be altered from F. white to occ.
white, vis. 5 secs., ecl. 5 secs. May.


Notice fixing Closing-hours of certain Shops in the Tokomaru Riding of the Horowhenua County under the Shops and Offices Act.

WHEREAS a requisition in writing, signed by a
majority of the occupiers of all the shops in trades
specified hereunder in the Tokomaru Riding, has been forwarded to me, desiring that all such shops in the riding shall be closed in the evening of every working-day as follows : Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, 6 o'clock p.m.; Wednesday, 1 o'clock p.m.; Saturday, 9 o'clock p.m.: And whereas the Horowhenua County Council has certified that the signatures to such requisition represent a majority of the occupiers of all the shops in each of the trades mentioned in the Tokomaru Riding of the Horowhenua County:
Now, therefore, I, John Andrew Millar, Minister of Labour, in pursuance of section 25 of the Shops and Offices Act, 1908, do hereby direct that, from and after the 11th day of July, 1910, all such shops in the Tokomaru Riding of the Horowhenua County shall be closed in accordance with such requisition.
Trades : Butchers, bootmakers, drapers, general storekeepers, painters, saddlers, milliners, stationers.

Bonus on Mineral Oil produced in New Zealand.

Mines Department,
Wellington, 1st June, 1909.

NOTICE is hereby given that a bonus will be paid for the production of mineral oil under the following conditions:—

  1. A bonus of 3d. per gallon (£6,250) will be paid on the first 500,000 gallons of mineral oil produced in the Dominion of New Zealand. The mineral oil in the refined state to have a specific gravity of 0·814 to 0·830, and a flash point of not less than 83° Fahr. by the Abel closed test.

  2. Notice of intention to claim the aforesaid bonus must be given in writing to the Minister of Mines not later than 31st March, 1912.

  3. The claim must be made before 31st March, 1913.

  4. The first claimant who proves to the satisfaction of the Government that he has fulfilled all the conditions to be the recipient of the bonus.

  5. All conditions as to quantity, quality, priority, and value to be fulfilled to the satisfaction of an officer appointed for the purpose by the Government.

Bonus for the Production of Quicksilver.

Mines Department,
Wellington, 14th February, 1910.

NOTICE is hereby given that a bonus of four pence (4d.) per pound will be paid on the production of the first one hundred thousand pounds weight (100,000 lb.) of good marketable retorted quicksilver, free from all impurities, from any mine in New Zealand, on the following conditions, that is to say:—

  1. That at least one-third of the quantity is produced on or before the 31st March, 1911, and the remaining two-thirds on or before the 31st March, 1912.

  2. No bonus will be payable until the whole of the one hundred thousand pounds (100,000 lb.) of quicksilver has been produced as stipulated to the satisfaction of an officer to be appointed by the Minister of Mines, and on whose certificate alone the bonus will be paid.

  3. In the event of more than one person producing the required quantities of quicksilver before the dates named, inquiry will be made by the officer above referred to, when, if it is found that each applicant is equally entitled to a bonus, the amount will be divided in proportion to the quantities produced by each applicant, but in no case shall any bonus be paid until at least one hundred thousand pounds (100,000lb.) of quicksilver has been produced in the aggregate.
