Award of the New Zealand Cross.

HIS Excellency the Governor has been pleased to confer the decorative distinction, known as the New Zealand Cross, upon

HENRY WILLIAM NORTHCROFT, Esquire,

for acts of distinguished valour performed by him while Ensign in the Patea Rangers during the course of the Maori War.

[Description of acts of distinguished valour referred to above, which have been inscribed in the roll of recipients and now published in conformity with Order in Council of 10th March, 1869:—
On the 2nd day of October, 1866, at the attack on Pungarehu, West Coast, Ensign Northcroft rescued from the enemy, with great bravery, and at the risk of his own life, Sergeant-Major Duff, who was mortally wounded and helpless.
At the attack upon Tirotiro Moana, in November, 1866, Ensign Northcroft bravely held his ground until help arrived, and thus prevented the mutilation of the body of Private Eunimedas by the enemy, and the capture of the carbine and revolver belonging to the deceased.]

Captain (Acting-Major) Julius Sandtmann to be Major. Date of commission, 1st December, 1909.

2nd Regiment, Wellington (Wairarapa) Mounted Rifles.

Lieutenant (Adjutant) Percy de Bathe Brandon to be Captain. Date of commission, 1st December, 1909.

WALDEGRAVE JOHN CRACROFT WILSON (formerly Lieutenant, E Battery, New Zealand Field Artillery Volunteers)

as Lieutenant on the Active List (Unattached), and with effect from 7th June, 1910.
