release the head, and thereafter completes the delivery of
the fastener into the driver-passage. (2.) In the combina-

ment that the driver dwells also at a point in its upstroke
prior to its reaching the point aforesaid for the purpose of
retaining the fasteners in the raceway while the separator is
being withdrawn.

Claims.—(1.) A machine of the class described having,
in combination, a plurality of stationary inverted dies ar-
ranged in series, a platen movable over the dies into co-
operative relation to different members of the series, means
for moving the platen yieldingly into contact with stock sup-
ported upon an opposed die, and means actuated by the
last-named means for effecting a stock-cutting relative move-
ment of the platen and the opposed die.

relating to presses.*


Claims.—(1.) In a machine of the class described, the
combination with co-operating presser-members relatively
movable into different pressing relations to stock carried
by one of said members, of means for effecting a relative
pressure-applying movement of said members after they
have been brought into a selected pressing relation to each
other, and means for effecting automatically a relative move-
ment of said members out of the selected pressing relation
after their relative pressure-applying movement and in a
direction transverse thereto.

Claims.—(1.) In an aeroplane flying-machine, the employ-
ment of side wing-planes pivotally mounted beneath the main
plane and simultaneously operable by ropes under the control
of the aviator for the purpose of controlling the direction of
flight in a vertical plane, substantially as specified, and illus-
trated in the drawing. (2.) In an aeroplane flying-machine,
the employment of the steering-rudder located above the rear
plane and hinged at its end so as to move in an arc over said
rear plane, with means whereby said rudder is operated by
the aviator, substantially as set forth, and illustrated in the
drawings.

provements in ridging-machines.*


Claims.—(1.) In a ridging-machine, an arrangement whereby
in operation the discs are carried on the ends of supporting-
arms that push them forward, substantially as described.
(2.) In a ridging-machine, the combination of a rocking-
shaft, disc-arms connected at one end to said shaft and carry-
ing the discs at their other ends, and means for operating
said shaft, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

Street, Ponsonby, Auckland aforesaid, Electrical Engineer.
Improved automatic hose-coupling, adaptable to Westing-
house brake hose-couplings.*


Claims.—(1.) For the purpose indicated, the parts con-
structed, arranged, combined, and operating substantially as
specified, and illustrated in the drawings. (2.) In a coupling-
head of the nature indicated, the employment of the cylinder,
the piston reciprocable therein, and having a valve at its
lower end, a seat upon which said valve rests to close the air-
passage to the coupling, and a plug operable to regulate the
passage of air for the purpose of actuating said piston, sub-
stantially as and for the purposes specified and illustrated.
(3.) In a coupling-head of the nature indicated, the employ-
ment of the piston having two heads reciprocable within a
cylinder secured to the coupling-head, with means for operat-
ing said piston by the pressure of air, substantially as and
for the purposes specified and illustrated. (4.) In a coupling-
head of the nature indicated, the employment of the plug
within the cylinder-head, and the handle for operating same,
substantially as and for the purposes specified and illustrated.
(5.) In a coupling-head of the nature indicated, the means
whereby the valve is closed when the two parts of the head
are uncoupled, substantially as specified and illustrated.

Extract from Specification.—The invention consists of boards
mounted on pairs of runners tapered near the ends at the top
and bottom respectively, and forming parallel inclined planes
to maintain during operation a horizontal position at all
points.

a corrugated body and plane bottom, substantially as and
for the purpose set forth with reference to the drawings.

Claims.—(1.) Means for indicating the position of sunken
vessels, comprising a buoy, means for supporting and re-
taining the said buoy upon the deck of a vessel, said means
being fixed to the deck, and means for attaching the buoy
to the vessel so that when the said vessel sinks the buoy will
leave the said supporting-means and float upon the surface
of the water, but still be attached to the vessel, substantially
as set forth.
