Notice to Mariners No. 59 of 1910.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 31st May, 1910.

THE following Notice to Mariners, received from the Marine Board, Hobart, Tasmania, is published for general information.

J. A. MILLAR.

THE attention of this office has been drawn by the Union Steamship Company of New Zealand (Limited) to an apparent inaccuracy in the Admiralty Chart No. 1079, Tasmania, with regard to the position of the Sloop Rock, which is shown on the chart as being distant 11½ miles from Cape Sorell, whereas the actual distance is stated to be only 7½ miles. It has also been pointed out that there are two breaks between the Sloop Rock and Point Hibbs, from which it would appear that there is shallow water in the locality, although there is nothing to this effect on the chart.

The matter was referred to the naval authorities, and the Naval Secretary has advised that the facts may be as stated, as the locality above mentioned is on the west coast of Tasmania, which, together with a large portion of the east coast, has never been properly surveyed

J. ADAMS, Secretary.

Marine Board Office, Hobart, 29th April, 1910.

Notice to Mariners No. 62 of 1910.

HOKIANGA BAR.—CHANGE IN CHANNEL.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 6th June, 1910.

NOTICE is hereby given that the channel over the bar of the Hokianga River has apparently shifted still further to the northward, and the magnetic bearing for crossing the bar off the harbour-entrance is now about east to east by north.

The South Channel where the leading-lights led across has now ceased to exist, and the lights are not now shown.

Captain Grubb, of the s.s. “Ohinemuri,” sounded the bar on the 21st May, coming in on the above bearings, and the least water obtained was 17 ft. L.W.S.T. Captain Dorling, s.s. “Waitangi,” sounded the same channel on the 27th May, getting the same water, 17 ft., which shows a slight increase from the last soundings in the previous North Channel.

Charts, &c., affected : Admiralty Chart No. 2525 and Plan 1091A; “New Zealand Pilot,” eighth edition, 1908, Chap. vii, page 201.

J. A. MILLAR.
