No. 26277.—19th July, 1909.—JOHN DEEGAN, of Invercargill, New Zealand, Engineer. An improved lock for differential gear of traction-engines and the like.*


Claims.—(1.) The distinct novelty of a locking-device as described in specification and shown on plan. (2.) In a lock as described, a sliding-block F placed in spur-wheel conveniently to engage the inner bevel wheel, preferably having its face toothed to suit teeth in bevel wheel. (3.) The distinct novelty of using the lock on the inner bevel wheel as described and shown. (4.) The novelty of locking differential or compensating gear by means of the inner bevel wheel in the manner described and shown in plan.

No. 26278.—23rd July, 1909.—ERNEST CHARLES AUSTIN, of Wanganui, New Zealand, Inventor. Improvements in inflating-valves for pneumatic tires.*


Claims.—(1.) An attachment to the inflation-valve of a pneumatic tire consisting of a washer adapted to be threaded on the valve-nipple and provided with an upper surface of resilient material, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

No. 26279.—23rd July, 1909.—GEORGE LEWIS, of Wellesley Road, Napier, New Zealand, Plasterer. An improved method for joining plaster slabs.*


Claim.—The improved method of joining plaster slabs consisting in first coating the adjacent edges with a layer of liquid plaster, and in then placing a strip of scrim or like material along the joint and imbedding it within such plaster, substantially as specified.

No. 26286.—22nd July, 1909.—GEORGE WILLIAM PENNEY, of Dunedin, New Zealand, Fellmonger. Method of and apparatus for ear-marking animals.*


Claims.—(1.) In apparatus for ear-marking animals of the class described, the provision in combination with ordinary pliers of a hollow die upon the face of which a particular name, letter, or mark is fashioned, and apertures in the lower wall of said die enabling a fluid to flow into the cut or puncture made for marking purposes, substantially as described.

No. 26298.—27th July, 1909.—JAMES HARVEY COOK, Farmer, and DAVID MITCHELL COOK, Blacksmith, both of Rochford, Victoria, Australia. Improvements in hame, trace, breeching, and other pivoted hooks.*


Claims.—(1.) A hook having a tubular socket by which to pivot it, a recess, a tongue, and a lug, providing an entrance between the recess-ends and nearer to the socket than to the other end, the said tongue and lug having bulbous enlargements as indicated, and the faces at the entrance-sides being flat and parallel. (2.) A hook as in claim 1 but with blunt (though not parallel and flat) faces at the said entrance. (3.) A hook as in claim 1 but with any suitable socket or eye, and with a recess-entrance as described relatively to fig. 9.

No. 26391.—10th August, 1909.—THOMAS PARKER, M.I.C.E., of Severn House, Ironbridge, Salop, England. Improvements in and relating to the destructive distillation of coal and other carbonaceous substances.*


Extract from Specification.—I provide the vertical retorts integrally cast in batteries with integral common top and bottom fittings, and these batteries are mounted within a furnace setting above inclined walls, upon which the residue of the distillation is broken on its fall thereon. Mixing-chambers are provided in position intermediate of the batteries, and gas is admitted thereto under regulations from gas-chambers mounted beneath in the lower part of the furnace-setting, while also air is admitted thereto under regulation. Mechanical or hydraulic gear is provided, operable from outside the furnace-setting, for the simultaneous opening and closure of the lower bottom plates. The retorts are provided of small diameter and tapered form, and coal is introduced into them from above, while the residue is discharged merely on the opening of the bottom cover-plate, and is broken up by its fall on the inclined walls referred to, whence it passes into a conveyer.

No. 26463.—20th August, 1909.—WILLIAM WOODS, of Burwood Road, Burwood, near Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, Engineer. A method of treating calcium-carbide to render same free from objectionable odour.*


Claims.—(1.) A process for deodorising calcium-carbide consisting of sprinkling or otherwise mixing perfumed petroleum through the calcium-carbide in the manner and in or about the proportions stated. (2.) A method of deodorising calcium-carbide by impregnating same with a combination of oil of almonds or some other equally pungent aromatic scent and petroleum, substantially as described. (3.) A deodorised calcium-carbide consisting of ordinary calcium-carbide in combination with a composition consisting of petroleum and oil of almonds in or about the proportions stated.

Extract from Specification.—The apparatus comprises a map mounted upon cardboard in sections adapted to fold together for transport purposes. The map is preferably on Mercator’s projection and of the two terrestrial hemispheres, though a map of a single hemisphere, or any lesser portion of a map of the world, may be used for a limited form of the game. The apparatus further comprises model warships, among which are flagships of distinctive construction, a number of merchant vessels having a characteristic form, and a number of counters.
