Notice to Imprestees under “ The Public Revenues Act, 1908.”

The Treasury,
Wellington, 28th February, 1910.

EVERY officer holding advances of public money is

requisitions for the amount required are to be made in

Notice to Mariners No. 24 of 1910.

FRENCH PASS.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 8th March, 1910.

IT having been brought under the notice of this Depart-
ment that some shipmasters take their vessels through
the French Pass against the stream, attention is drawn to
the following caution, which is published in the “ New
Zealand Nautical Almanac,” viz.:—
“ Caution about French Pass.—It has been reported that
it is becoming a common practice to take vessels through
the French Pass against the stream. This is a highly
dangerous action, and is likely to terminate eventually in a
serious disaster. Masters of vessels are therefore cautioned
against this practice. Not only has it been found that
vessels will sometimes not answer their helm owing to the
strong tide acting on their bow, but there is a great danger
of meeting another vessel coming from an opposite direction,
and not being able to see one another in sufficient time to
avoid a collision. As Nelson is now able to be worked at
any state of tide by the local steamers the temptation to do
this is all the greater, hence the need of this warning.”

2685; “ New Zealand Pilot,” eighth edition, 1908, Chap. vi,
