Claims.—(1.) A mechanical advertising-device especially applicable to hoardings in which a number of moving-figure advertisements are provided, each comprising a stationary background and moving parts, which latter are operated from a single source of power by means of one or more common operating-members, substantially as described.

No. 26176.—1st July, 1909.—CARL FRIEDRICH SIEGERT, of 45 Betty Street, Jeppes, near Johannesburg, Transvaal, Tinsmith. Improvements in the treatment of auriferous black sand, concentrates, and other like metalliferous materials, for the recovery of the metal contents thereof.*

Claims.—(1.) The process for treating auriferous black sand, concentrates, and other refractory materials or ores, which consists in roasting the sand, concentrates, or ore, or heating the same to a dull red heat, then bringing the heated mass into contact with a solution consisting of water, sodium chloride, and sal-ammoniac, then evaporating the solution by the application of heat to the mass, then adding sulphuric acid to the mass, then adding water to the mass, then drawing off the diluted-acid solution, and then recovering the now free metal contents of the mass, substantially as described.

Claims.—(1.) A closure-device for telephone-mouthpieces of the type described, comprising a diaphragm or disc, which device is carried within a frame, and is capable of being brought into position across the aperture in the casing carrying the diaphragm or disc by means of suitable levers, in the manner and substantially as described. (2.) A closure-device for telephone-mouthpieces substantially as described with reference to the drawings. (3.) In telephone instruments, means for positively engaging automatically with the centre-pin or binding-post of the transmitting diaphragm or any other part thereof, for the purpose and substantially as described. (4.) In means for closing the mouthpiece of a telephone-transmitter, the provision of a blade-spring adapted to engage with the centre-pin or with the transmitter diaphragm, substantially as described. (5.) Means for closing the mouthpiece and at the same time engaging or contacting with the diaphragm transmitter, substantially as described.

No. 26359.—3rd August, 1909.—JOHN BATE, of Parnell, Auckland, New Zealand, Engineer. An improved machine for drying and brushing flax-fibre or anything of a like nature.*

Claims.—(1.) In the continuous brushing-machine for flax and other fibrous substances as specified, the same consisting of, in combination, continuous twin chains with battens guided by runners attached thereto, said battens having spring clips mounted thereon, said continuous chains being driven by and guided over sprocket-wheels mounted on shafts running on adjustable spring bearings, said sprocket-wheels having barrels fixed between them, the peripheries of such barrels bearing against revolving brushes; revolving twin brushes mounted on shafts running in spring and adjustable bearings and fitted with combs, the whole being mounted on a base in the form of a shallow box or triangle, with cross battens, said base being surmounted by a casing with heated pipes therein and exhaust fan thereon, for the purpose and in the manner set forth, as described and illustrated. (2.) The application, arrangement, and combination of the different parts as specified, for the purpose and in the manner set forth, as described and illustrated.

Claims.—(1.) A corset having bones or equivalent parts arranged in a direction approximately at right angles to the wearer’s ribs, in combination with short transverse bones arranged at the upper part of such corset between the other bones, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.

Claims.—(1.) In a “step-by-step” or “pick-up-one-tooth-at-a-time” mechanism as shown, an extension of the back-stop lever G, having a pin or stud H to engage in a notch at the back of armature lever D, to prevent more than one tooth passing at one time, substantially as described. (2.) In a “step-by-step” mechanism as shown, the curving of the driving-click E, and arrangement of parts as shown, so that the back-stop stud K on being raised disengages the driving-click from the wheel and allows its free rotation, substantially as described and shown.

Claims.—(1.) In a milking-machine, a plurality of pumps supplying compressed air directly to the flexible linings of teat-cups at each outstroke of the pistons, and maintaining a vacuum in a milk-vessel by the outstroke of the pistons, substantially as set forth. . . . (3.) In a milking-machine, a teat-cup made in two parts locked together by beads formed on the two parts, and a fold of the flexible lining compressed between the beads, substantially as set forth. . . . (7.) In a milking-machine, a pump combining the functions of a pulsator, an air-compressor, and a vacuum generator, substantially as set forth.

Claim.—In sheep-dipping baths, in combination with a bath of the usual shape and size, a platform pivoted at one end, kept normally in a level position by a balance lever and an adjustable sliding-weight, the other and outer end of which dips down as each animal walks on to it, sufficiently far not to be able to retreat, for the purpose of sliding each animal in turn into the fluid contained in the usually shaped dipping-bath, with pens arranged for dividing the cleaned animals as desired, all substantially as shown on the drawing, and as described and explained.
