FORMOSA STRAIT.—REPORTED BANK.—INFORMATION.—The following information has been received from the commanders of the U.S.S. “Petrel” and the U.S.S. “Wheeling” relative to a search recently made by those vessels for the 12-fathom bank reported in 1905, by the steamer “Manchuria,” in Formosa Strait, in (approximately) latitude 25° 29′ N., longitude 120° 20′ E.
On the evening of the 26th July, 1910, the “Petrel” obtained soundings of 14, 13, and 10 fathoms, black-mud bottom, about 6 miles eastward of the reported position of the bank. The sounding of 14 fathoms was obtained in (approximately) latitude 25° 29′ 30″ N., longitude 120° 27′ 45″ E. The soundings of 13 and 10 fathoms, which were taken practically together while the ship was proceeding at slow speed, were obtained in (approximately) latitude 25° 30′ 15″ N., longitude 120° 25′ 30″ E. Two soundings eastward of the first position gave depths of 30 fathoms; fourteen soundings between the two positions gave depths of 29 to 35 fathoms, and three soundings westward of the last position gave depths of 26 and 30 fathoms.
The ship’s position had been determined by astronomical observations taken a few hours previously, and was checked by the run back from bearings of Turnabout and Ockseu Lights.
On the same night the U.S.S. “Wheeling” obtained depths of 30 to 32 fathoms on a line of seven soundings, taken about 1 mile apart, which passed within 1 mile north-eastward of the charted position of the 12-fathom bank.
