Claims.—(1.) In the generation of acetylene gas, in combination with the carbide case or holder and the gasometer, the cover of the said case so formed that by turning it the tap under it is actuated with the automatic opening of a tap as the gasometer descends to a low position, all substantially as shown on the drawing, and as described and explained. (2.) In the automatic bringing into action of carbide-generators, in combination, a tap on the pipe from the said generator to the gasometer, having a sleeve and chain so constructed that when the said gasometer descends too low the tap is automatically opened with a union in the pipe for forming a continuous passage for the generated gas, all substantially as set forth.

No. 26756.—15th October, 1909.—ARCHIBALD MCDONALD, of Henley, near Dunedin, New Zealand, Farmer, and ALEXANDER BROWN-DURIE, of Princes Street, Dunedin aforesaid, Solicitor. Improvements in filtering-apparatus.
Extract from Specification.—We make a receptacle of convenient shape, preferably as shown, but in any case one in which an upright filtering-diaphragm is so placed that two compartments are formed, into one of which liquid is poured, and through which it percolates to the other compartment, from which it is drawn off. The liquid is poured on a baffle-plate arranged to prevent the disturbance of any sediment after it has settled. Just behind this diaphragm, in the receiving compartment, a sediment-well is formed under the bottom, with a long narrow entrance from the bottom to it. This well is preferably of circular section as being easier to clean, which is done by the removal of screw-plugs.
