BRITISH COLUMBIA.
CHATHAM SOUND.—EDYE PASSAGE.—SOUTHERN AND WESTERN APPROACHES.—HYDROGRAPHIC INFORMATION.—The Canadian Government has given notice that Captain J. F. Parry, R.N., of H.B.M.S. “Egeria,” furnishes the following information regarding the southern and western approaches to Edye Passage, Chatham Sound, British Columbia:—
A small rocky head, with a least depth of 2 fathoms over it, marked by kelp, surrounded by depths of 11 to 13 fathoms, is located on the following bearings:—
Seal Rock (eastern), N. 10° 45′ E., distant 2·58 miles.
Bass Rock, S. 70° 15′ E., distant 2·91 miles.
Fan Island, S. 39° 30′ E., distant 3·94 miles.
Approx. position: Lat. 53° 57′ 24″ N., long. 130° 48′ 30″ W.
The rocky ledge extending to the westward from the south-western side of Porcher Peninsula has fairly regular depths over it, the 10-fathom line being situated 4 miles west-south-westward of Bass Rock.
The outermost depth of 5 fathoms on this ledge is located on the following bearings:—
Seal Rock (eastern), N. 6° W., distant 4 miles.
Bass Rock, N. 75° 45′ E., distant 1·89 miles.
Fan Island, S. 45° 15′ E., distant 2·24 miles.
Mariners are cautioned not to pass between this depth of 5 fathoms and the shore of Porcher Island.
The rock shown on the charts 1,400 yards N. 44° 15′ W. from Bass Rock dries 17 ft. at low water, and is therefore nearly always visible.
The limit of the foul ground extending northward from Bass Rock is marked by a rock 2 ft. above water, located 1·21 miles N. 12° E. from Bass Rock.
A rocky patch, with a least depth of 5 ft. over it, marked by kelp, is located on the following bearings:—
Warrior Rock, S. 5° W., distant 1·75 miles.
High White Islet, N. 66° E., distant 3·37 miles.
Stephens Island, conspicuous clump off south-western extreme, N. 6° 30′ E., distant 3·20 miles.
Approx. position: Lat. 54° 05′ 33″ N., long. 130° 50′ 52″ W.
A rocky patch, with two small heads lying close together, each with a least depth of 6 ft. over it, marked by kelp, is located on the following bearings:—
Warrior Rock, S. 44° 15′ W., distant 2·87 miles.
Conspicuous clump, N. 26° 45′ W., distant 3·22 miles.
High White Islet, N. 49° 15′ E., distant 1·61 miles.
This rocky patch is evidently identical with the 3- and 5-fathom heads shown in the immediate vicinity.
Approx. position: Lat. 54° 05′ 38″ N., long. 130° 47′ 42″ W.
A small rocky patch, with a least depth of 18 ft. over it, unmarked by kelp, is located on the following bearings:—
Warrior Rock, S. 30° 15′ W.
Conspicuous clump, N. 16° 45′ W.
High White Islet, N. 66° 30′ E.
Approx. position: Lat. 54° 06′ 04″ N., long. 130° 48′ 50″ W.
A small rocky head, with a least depth of 18 ft. over it, marked by kelp, is located on the following bearings:—
High White Islet, N. 41° 45′ W.
Angle Rock, N. 81° 45′ E.
Rod Island (centre), S. 68° 15′ E.
A small rocky head, with a least depth of 6 ft. over it, marked by kelp, is located on the following bearings:—
Warrior Rock, N. 41° E., distant 2·34 miles.
Seal Rock (eastern), S. 61° 15′ E.
A detached rocky patch, with a least depth of 12 ft. over it, marked by kelp, is located ½ mile S. 65° 30′ E. from the last-mentioned 6 ft. rock.
Mariners are cautioned that extensive rocky patches have been found between Warrior and Seal Rocks, and they should not attempt to pass between them.
NOTE.—The largest of the Warrior Rocks is the westernmost. It is 22 ft. in height, the eastern rock being 13 ft.
The highest of the Seal Rocks lies in the eastern part of the group, and is 9 ft. high, the western rock being 6 ft. in height.

SOUTH PACIFIC OCEAN.
SOLOMON ISLANDS.—FLORIDA ISLAND.—SOUTH COAST.—GAVUTU BANK.—BEACON REPLACED BY BUOY.—The German Government has given notice that the beacon marking the south-eastern side of Gavutu Bank, southern coast of Florida Island, Solomon Islands, has been replaced by an iron barrel buoy.
Approx. position: Lat. 9° 07′ 15″ S., long. 160° 12′ 15″ E.

SAMOA ISLANDS.—TUTUILA ISLAND.—PAGO PAGO.—RANGE BEACONS.—DIRECTIONS.—The commanding officer of the U.S.S. “St. Louis” reports, under date of 3rd August, 1909, that the leading-marks at Pago Pago, Tutuila Island, Samoa Islands, are inadequate. The white tripod on Breaker Point cannot be seen until close-to, and the cross on the Roman Catholic Church, which forms the front leading-mark of the range leading in past Breaker Point, is practically invisible.
Strangers, therefore, in getting on the first range coming from the westward should bring the horn of the peak to bear N. 29° 30′ E. and stand in on this bearing. If the black depression which is directly under the beacon on Breaker Point can be seen, that in line with the peak will give a good passage in.
The range beacons on Step Point are also indistinguishable until close aboard.
