New Guinea.

DAMPIER STRAIT.—Four reefs are reported to exist in the S.-ern. approach to the strait: (a) In 5° 57′ S., 148° 35′ E.; (b) in 6° 13′ S., 148° 52′ E.; (c) in 6° 14′ S., 148° 53′ E.; (d) from the S.-wrn. isl. of the Gracieuse Archip. (6° 13′ S., 148° 57½′ E.) a reef extends for about 3 miles S. 67° W. July.

FRIEDERICH WILHELMHAFEN.—AMENDED NOTICE.—LEAD-ING-LTS.—(a.) Rear lt., F. white, elev. 33 ft., R. 8 miles, exh. from a white frame 33 ft. high, in 5° 12¾′ S., 145° 49¼′ E., on the N.E. side of Schering Penin. (b.) Front lt., F. red, elev. 26 ft., R. 2 miles, exh. from a white frame 19 ft. high, in 5° 12¼′ S., 145° 48¾′ E., on the S.E. side of Beliao Isl. July.

Solomon Islands.

BOUGAINVILLE STRAIT.—MASAMASA ISL.—A reef, said to be awash, is reported to exist in 6° 46′ S., 156° 8′ E., about 2¼ miles N. 10° W. from the N.-wrn. pt. of the isl. It has been marked “E.D.” on the chart. July.

CHOISEUL ISL.—A reef, said to break, is reported to exist in 6° 57′ S., 157° 25′ E., off N.-ern. coast of the isl. July.

GIZO ISL.—(a.) A reef, carrying about 4 fms., is reported to exist in 8° 5¼′ S., 156° 45¼′ E., with N.W. extr. of the isl. N. 29° E. about 3 miles, and 563 ft. summit N. 77° E. It has been marked “P.D.” on the chart. (b.) A reef, carrying about 4 fms., is reported to exist in 8° 5¼′ S., 156° 46′ E., with N.W. extr. of the isl. N. 16° E. 2¼ miles, and 563 ft. summit N. 79° E. July.

Fiji Islands.

WAILANGILALA ISL. LT.—About 1st June, 1909, this F. white lt. (16° 45′ S., 179° 6′ W.) was to be replaced by a fl. white lt. every 5 secs., elev. 95 ft., R. 15 miles. July.

Caroline Islands.

PONAPE.—KITI (RONKITI HARB.).—Ark., carrying 5 ft., is reported to exist in 6° 47¾′ N., 158° 12′ E., in mid-chan. in the narrows of the harb., about ⅞ cable S.-erd. from the 4 ft. shoal now charted. “P.D.” has been charted against this rk. July.

Hawaiian (Sandwich) Islands.

MAUI.—KAWIKI HEAD LT.—This F. red lt. (20° 46′ N., 155° 59′ W.) on Puu Kii Islet, nrd. of Kawiki Head, is now viz. around the hor. July.

SOUTH AMERICA.

SUNKEN WRECKS AND FLOATING DERELICTS.—SUNKEN WRECKS.—RIO DE LA PLATA.—BUENOS AIRES ROADS.—A wrk., marked by a black lt.-buoy, exh. a F. white lt., in 34° 35¼′ S., 58° 18¼′ W., in the roads, 3¹⁄₁₀ miles N. 76° E. from the Time-sig. Station, N. basin. July.

SOUTH ATLANTIC OCEAN.

SOUTH SHETLANDS.—RKS.—1. A ridge of rks., “Ornen Rks,” on which is a rocky islet, extends about 3 miles S.E. (true) from Cape Melville (62° 2′ S., 57° 34′ W.), King George Isl. 2. A reef of rks., “Telefon Rks.,” extends about 3 miles S.E. by E. (true) from the wrn. entr. pt. of Admiralty Bay (62° 13′ S., 58° 30′ W.). 3. A rk., “Raven Rk.,” carrying 9 ft., exists in 63° 0′ S., 60° 31′ W., in centre of narrowest part of entr. to Port Foster, Deception Isl. 4. Two rks., “Svip Rk.,” exist in 62° 39′ S., 61° 28′ W., 8 miles N. 29° W. (true) from the islet off the N. pt. of Snow Isl., wrd. of Castle Rk. 5. A rk., “Nor Rk., exists in 62° 1¼′ S., 62° 27′ W., about 48 miles N. 6° E. (true) from Cape Smith, the nrn. extr. of Smith Isl. “P.D.” has been charted against it. July.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA.

Gulf St. Vincent.—Glenelg Jetty Breakwater.

MASTERS of vessels, pilots, and others are informed that a white light is now exhibited from either end of the break-water-works now in course of construction off the Glenelg Jetty.

A light is also shown from a barge which is moored near the said works.

A further notice will be issued when the work is completed.

This affects Admiralty Chart 2389A.

Notice to Mariners No. 68 of 1909.

AUCKLAND HARBOUR. — RANGITOTO CHANNEL. — BUOY LIGHT ALTERED.

Wellington, N.Z., 28th August, 1909.

NOTICE is hereby given that, on or about 1st November, 1909, the fixed green Wigham light situated on the eastern side of Rangitoto Channel (Takapuna Point bearing S. 72° W., Bean Rock Lighthouse S. 3° E.) will be changed to a green occulting acetone light, 2 seconds’ flash, 10 seconds obscured.

Charts, &c., affected: Admiralty Plan No. 1896, Auckland Harbour Entrances; “New Zealand Pilot,” eighth edition, 1908, Chap. ii, page 37; “New Zealand Nautical Almanac,” 1909, pages 113 and 241, and plan facing page 112.

Notice to Mariners No. 69 of 1909.

TIMARU HARBOUR.—ALTERATION OF BREAKWATER AND EXTENSION MOLE LIGHTS.

Wellington, N.Z., 31st August, 1909.

NOTICE is hereby given that, on and after 23rd September, 1909, two green lights, placed vertically 5 ft. apart, will be exhibited from the north end of the Timaru Eastern Extension Mole in lieu of the present white light. The lights will be at heights of 30 ft. and 35 ft. above high water. Also that the red light on the north end of the concrete breakwater will be lowered to 20 ft. above high water, so that it will be hidden from view to vessels making the harbour until open of the north end of the Eastern Extension Breakwater.

Charts, &c., affected: Plan on Admiralty Chart No. 2532 and Chart No. 3620; “New Zealand Pilot,” eighth edition, 1908, Chap. viii, p. 246; “New Zealand Nautical Almanac,” 1909, pages 183 and 303, and plan facing page 182.

Notice of Intention to take Land in Block IV, Glenomaru Survey District, for Scenery-preservation Purposes.

NOTICE is hereby given that it is proposed, under the provisions of “The Public Works Act, 1908,” and “The Scenery Preservation Act, 1908,” to take for scenery-preservation purposes the land described in the Schedule hereto. And notice is hereby further given that the plan of the land so required to be taken is deposited in the Post-office at Glenomaru, and is there open for inspection; and that all persons affected by the taking of the said land should, if they have any well-grounded objections to the taking thereof, set forth the same in writing, and send such writing, within forty days from the first publication of this notice, to the Minister of Public Works, Wellington.
