Notice to Mariners No. 62 of 1909.
MARTIN’S BAY, SOUTH ISLAND, S.W. COAST.—REMOVAL OF ROCKS, HOLLYFORD RIVER ENTRANCE.
Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 16th August, 1909.
N OTICE is hereby given that the rocks at the entrance of Hollyford River have been removed to a depth of 13 ft. at high water, spring tides, over a channel 150 ft. wide. Generally the channel hugs the sandsplit all the way in. In making the entrance pick up a painted red rock and beacon in line with a white beacon behind it on a N. 55° E. course. Keep on this course until two white beacons come in line bearing S. 80° E. just after passing the tail of the sandsplit. Keep the white beacons in line until abreast of a sunken rock with an iron rod and pointer on it. Then keep along the sandsplit-edge.
Vessels should only work the river on the last quarter of the flood, as the ebb tide runs too fast to work in.
There is a rise and fall of 8 ft. 3 in. at spring tides at the entrance, but this decreases rapidly as you go up the river. The bearings are magnetic.
Charts, &c., affected: Admiralty Chart No. 2589, sheet XII; “New Zealand Pilot,” eighth edition, 1908, Chap. X, page 315.
