✨ Notices to Mariners
Aug. 5.] THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE. 2049
LIMPOPO RIVER.—A shoal, rk. and coral, carrying 1½ fms., is reported to exist with its wrn. end approx. in 25°14′ S., 33°44′ E., about 8 miles erd. from the bar of the river, from the above position; it extends about 7 miles erd., at about 5 miles from the shore. Caution.—The coast in the vicinity of the Limpopo River, and erd. as far as Zavara Pt., is entirely unsurveyed, and should be given a wide birth. June.
BEIRA APPROACH.—In March, 1909, the least depth on the bar of the Portella (S.E.) Chan., near No. 2 buoy (19°57¾′ S., 34°56′ E.), was 10 ft. A vessel arriving off the bar with a draught approx. to the actual depth at the time should remain outside No. 1 buoy until H.W. Whenever possible, the steam pilot-boat will sound the bar ahead of the vessel, and sig. the depth ascertained. Note.—A note, “10 ft. bar reported (April, 1909),” has been charted in above position. June.
ADEN GULF, RED SEA.
ADEN HARB.—CAUTION.—During the dredging operations now in process in the port, it may be necessary at any time, without notice, to remove chan. or mooring buoys. The chan. buoys, when relaid, are to be placed in new positions to make the widened chan. The dredgers when at work carry, by day, 2 black discs hor. on the side on which vessels may pass, and 1 black disc on the other side. By night, these discs are replaced by white lts. in the same positions. April.
A red conical lt.-buoy, exh. a F. red lt., is est. in 12°47½′ N., 44°59¼′ E., in the harb., with the N.-wrn. extr. of Flint Isl. S. 17° E. 325 ft., and Courthouse Flagstaff S. 40° W. Feb.
The rev. white lt. (12°45¾′ N., 44°59¼′ E.) on summit of headland (173 ft.), Elephant’s Back, has been replaced by a fl. lt. every 2½ secs.—fl. ⅓₀ sec., ecl. 2⅔₀ secs.—showing white from N. 62° E., through N., to N. 36° W.; red from N. 62° E., through E., to S. 60° E.; and red from N. 36° W. to N. 54° W.; elev. 188 ft., R. 16 miles, exh. from a grey cyl. stone building 15 ft. high. June.
EASTERN ARCHIPELAGO, ETC.
BANKA ISL.—A reef, carrying 2 fms., exists in 1°35¾′ S., 105°43¾′ E., in Klabat Bay, N. coast of the isl., about 1 mile S. 3° E. from Morantong Pt. A conical buoy, red and black hor., is temp. moored on the N.-wrn. side of the reef, and is to be replaced later on by a white conical buoy est. on the N.-ern. side of the reef. June.
PACIFIC OCEAN.
BISMARCK ARCHIP.—NEW IRELAND (NEW MECKLENBURG).—Kaevieng Harb. lt. (2°35′ S., 150°47′ E.) is not red, but a F. white lt., R. 2 miles, occasionally exh. from the head of the wharf. June.
FRIEDERICH WILHELMHAFEN.—LEADING-LTS.—The rear lt., F. white, elev. 33 ft., and 21 ft. above the ground, R. 8 miles, is exh. in 5°13′ S., 145°49′ E.; and the front lt., F. red, elev. 26 ft., and 16 ft. above the ground, R. 2 miles, is exh. in 5°12′ S., 145°49′ E. June.
HAWAII.—NAPUPU PT. LT.—This F. white lt. (19°29′ N., 155°57′ W.), Kealakekua Bay, has been perm. disc. June.
OAHU.—PEARL RIVER.—Owing to dredging having rendered it unnecessary, the red pile beacon in 21°19½′ N., 157°58¼′ W., on Bishops Pt. Shoal, has been removed. June.
Bonin Islands.
REEF.—A reef, extending about 800 ft. E. and W., and about 80 ft. wide, estimated as carrying 6 ft. to 8 ft., is reported to lie in 29°48′ N., 142°33′ E., nrd. of the Bonin Isls. This reef is probably identical with the reef (P.D.) at present chartered in 29°37′ N., 141°58′ E.; the latter reef has therefore been expunged. June.
RAPA ISL.—AHUREI BAY.—A black beacon surm. by a cyl. is est. in 27°36¼′ S., 144°19′ W., 2 cables N. 16° E. from the pier-head at Ahurei Village, to mark the edge of the reef on the S. side of the bay. June.
