Notice of Acceptance of Complete Specifications.


Patent Office,
Wellington, 14th July, 1909.

COMPLETE specifications relating to the undermentioned applications for Letters Patent have been accepted, and are open to public inspection at this office. Any person may, at any time within two months from the date of this Gazette, give me notice in writing of opposition to the grant of any such patent. Such notice must set forth the particular grounds of objection, and be in duplicate. A fee of 10s. is payable thereon.

No. 24579.—29th June, 1908.—JAMES SHEPHERD and ALBERT CEDERMAN, both of Hokitika, New Zealand Engineers. Improvements in driving-gear of locomotive engines.*


Claims.—(1.) In a locomotive of the kind described, the employment of a shaft rotated by the engine and extending from one bogie to the other, gearing communicating the motion of the shaft to the axles of the bogie, and ball or universal joints in the shaft to allow the bogies to swivel, substantially as set forth. (2.) The combination and arrangements of parts comprising the improvements in driving-gear of locomotive engines, substantially as and for the purposes set forth, and illustrated in the drawing.

No. 24625.—6th July, 1908.—WILLIAM HUGH RIDDELL, of Dunedin, New Zealand. An improved construction of school-desk.*


Extracts from Specification.—According to this invention, the desk-frame is formed with a movable upper portion. . . . Depending also from such upper portion are toothed racks, and carried by the lower portion is a shaft having pinions thereon which gear with the teeth of such racks. . . . The desk-top is formed in two parts, longitudinally divided, the back part being a narrow strip to which the front or main part is hinged. The back part is attached to the frame in such a manner that it may be moved backwards or forwards thereon. . . . When a seat is combined with the desk, the frame is provided with a rearward extension formed with supports or bearings at different heights. The seat is formed of a flat board having a trunnion at each side adapted to fit within the supports or bearings.

No. 24666.—25th July, 1908.—ELLIOTT L’ESTRANGE BARTON, of Hawera, New Zealand, Solicitor. Improvements relating to filing systems for documents and the like.*


Claims.—(1.) For the purposes indicated, a file comprising sheets arranged in series of ten and numbered at the sides upon tabs, the intermediate sheets being numbered upon tabs at the bottom of the sheets in black, and subsheets arranged between the intermediate sheets and having tabs numbered in red, substantially as set forth. (2.) The method of entering the client’s name in a serial index and assigning a number thereto, entering the client’s name and that number in an alphabetical index, and entering the business under that number in a business-matter index, and placing the papers relating to the business on a file having sheets numbered upon tabs, substantially as set forth. (3.) A file having spikes with holes near their points, whereby a cord may be inserted prior to withdrawing the papers, for the purpose of tying the papers together after removal from the file, substantially as set forth. (4.) The combination and arrangement of parts comprising the improvements relating to filing systems for documents and the like, substantially as and for the purposes set forth, and illustrated in the drawings.

Claim.—Improvements in and relating to book-supports, comprising an adjustable wire spring clip, the end thereof terminating in loops at right angles to each other, substantially as and for the purpose set forth, and as illustrated in the drawings.

No. 24775.—7th August, 1908.—HARRY BOSTOCK, of Dunedin, New Zealand, Commercial Traveller (nominee of Edwin Bostock, of Stafford, England, Shoe-manufacturer). Improvements in boots and shoes.*


Claims.—(1.) A lace-up shoe having combined therewith means for converting it into a buckle or other house-shoe. (2.) A shoe having eyeleted meeting-flaps, a lateral slot in each flap, a tongue narrow at its lower end and wider at its upper end, and a loop on the back of the tongue, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. (3.) In combination with a shoe constructed according to claim 2, a buckle having a double leather strip passing therethrough and a lace connected to the rear strip, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

No. 24785.—12th August, 1908.—ALFRED MELVILLE PERRY, of 231 Willis Street, Wellington, New Zealand, Clerk. An improvement in mud-guards for ladies’ cycles.*


Claims.—(1.) The combination with a cycle-wheel mud-guard, of strips of American leather or other suitable material secured one along each edge of the mud-guard and shaped to extend across the corresponding sides of the wheel-rim, substantially as specified. (2.) The attachments to the mud-guards of cycle-wheels, constructed and arranged substantially as described and explained, and for the purpose set forth.
