LOCALITY AND DESCRIPTION.
Situated on the western slopes of the Ruahine Range, at the junction of the Kawhatau River and the Hikurangi Stream, access being from Mangaweka, which is about fourteen miles distant by formed dray-road. Altitude varies from 2,500 ft. to 3,500 ft. above sea-level. Good grazing-country; undulating to hilly, with steep cliffs along the river frontages. Soil is light, on papa formation. The forest is chiefly birch, with some rimu, matai, and totara trees. The area is well watered by the Kawhatau and Hikurangi Rivers and by mountain-streams.
