NOTICE OF INTENTION TO TAKE LAND.

In the matter of “The Municipal Corporations Act, 1908,” “The Wellington City Empowering Act, 1897,” “The Wellington City Empowering Act, 1899,” and “The Public Works Act, 1908.”

NOTICE is hereby given that the Council of the City of Wellington proposes, under the provisions of the above-mentioned Acts, and all other Acts enabling it in that behalf, to execute a certain public work—namely, the widening of Willis Street, in the said city—and for the purpose of such public work the land described in the Schedule hereto is required to be taken. And notice is hereby further given that a plan of the land so required to be taken is deposited in the public office of the Town Clerk to the said Council, in the Town Hall, Cuba Street, in the said city, and is there open for inspection without fee by all persons during ordinary office hours; and that all persons affected by the execution of the said public work or the taking of such lands should, if they have well-grounded objections to the execution of the said public works or to the taking of the said lands, set forth the same in writing, and send such writing, within forty days from the first publication of this notice, to the Wellington City Council addressed to the Town Clerk at his said office.

PRIVATE BILL.

In the matter of a proposed Bill, or Act, intituled “An Act to enable the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Wellington to raise Moneys for the purpose of purchasing Sites in the Town of Wanganui, and building thereon a Church, Presbytery, and Convent, by mortgage of certain Lands situate in the Town of Wanganui, and to enable him to lease the same Lands for any Term not exceeding Sixty-six Years; and also to authorise the refund to the Trustees in the estate of the late Charles Henry Kirk, of Wanganui, Catholic Priest, of the Estate Duty paid in respect of certain Lands.”

PURSUANT to the Standing Orders of the House of Representatives relating to private Bills, the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Wellington and the Trustees in the estate of Charles Henry Kirk, late of the Town of Wanganui, Catholic Priest, deceased—namely, Thomas O’Shea, of the City of Wellington, Catholic Priest, and Thomas Lloyd, of the Town of Wanganui, Solicitor—hereby give notice that, within fourteen days of the meeting of the General Assembly of New Zealand to be held next after the date of this notice, a Petition will be presented to the General Assembly of New Zealand by them praying and applying for leave to bring in a private Bill, to be called “The Wanganui Roman Catholic Lands Act, 1909.”

The objects of the said application and Bill are as follow:—

  1. To enable the Archbishop to borrow, on the security of the lands described in the First Schedule to the proposed Bill, containing one acre and two roods, more or less, being the sections numbered 157, 158, 159, 160, 161, and 162 on the plan of the Town of Wanganui, any sum or sums of money, not exceeding in the aggregate the sum of twenty-five thousand pounds, by means of a mortgage or mortgages for the purpose of purchasing other lands in the Town of Wanganui, and building on the lands so purchased, or elsewhere in the Town of Wanganui, a Roman Catholic church, presbytery, and convent.
  2. To enable the Archbishop to lease the lands described in the First Schedule to the proposed Bill: (a) For any term not exceeding sixty-six years without right of renewal: (b) for any term not exceeding twenty-one years (1) with a perpetual right of renewal; (2) with a provision that prior to the expiration of the term a new lease for a further term not exceeding twenty-one years and containing the same provisions (including this provision for renewal) shall be put up to public auction at the annual value of the land only, subject to a condition that in the event of any person other than the lessee becoming entitled to the new lease, such person shall before being let into possession pay to the lessee the value of the improvements thereon, to be fixed by valuation; (3) with a provision that the lessee may at any time prior to the expiration of the term, at his option, either have a new lease as provided by clause (1) hereof, or have a new lease put up to public auction under clause (2) hereof: and also to enable the Archbishop to accept a surrender of any lease.
  3. To enable the Archbishop to lay out and form streets, roads, paths, and drains through and over the said lands, and to dedicate the same, or any part thereof, to the public.
  4. To authorise the Minister of Finance to refund to the Trustees in the estate of Charles Henry Kirk, late of Wanganui, Catholic Priest, deceased, the sum paid by them as estate duty in respect of the lands described in the Second Schedule to the proposed Bill, being, first, sections numbered 141, 142, 143, 146, and 148 on the plan of the Town of Wanganui; secondly, section numbered 144 on the plan of the Town of Wanganui; thirdly, that piece of land being part of Suburban Block 36, Town of Wanganui, and being sections numbered 837, 838, and 839; fourthly, that piece of land being allotment numbered 12 on a plan deposited in the office of the Registrar of Deeds, at Wellington, as Number 49, of a subdivision into allotments of Suburban Block Number 14, Town of Wanganui; fifthly, that piece of land being Section 105, Township of Mangaweka.

A copy of the said Petition and Bill will be deposited in the office of the Examiner of Standing Orders either before or within fourteen days after the commencement of the said session.

SCHOOL FOR DEAF-MUTES, SUMNER, NEAR CHRISTCHURCH.

Under the control and supervision of the Education Department.

FOR Deaf Children of sound intellect. The pupils are taught to use and understand ordinary speech. The full charge for board and education is £40 a year, but less is accepted from parents who cannot afford to pay this amount. In case of necessity admission is free.

By the Education Act, the education of deaf children between the ages of 7 and 16 is made compulsory. A child is, as a rule, best fitted to begin the school course at about the age of 6, but advice should be obtained as soon as any sign of deafness is observed.

The following classes of deaf children are admitted:

  1. Children born deaf, or who have lost their hearing before learning to speak.
  2. Children who can hear a little, but are too deaf to be taught in an ordinary school.
  3. Children who have lost their hearing after having learned to speak.

Parents and other persons acquainted with such cases above the age of 4 are invited to communicate with the Director, or with
