BOROUGH OF BIRKENHEAD.

SPECIAL ORDER MAKING SPECIAL RATE.

PUBLIC notice is hereby given that the following special order, making a special rate to meet the interest and other charges on a loan of £350, was duly passed at a special meeting of the Council on the 25th day of February, 1909, and confirmed at a special meeting of the Council on the 25th day of March, 1909, viz. :—

That, in pursuance and exercise of the powers vested in it in that behalf by “The Local Bodies’ Loans Act, 1908,” the Birkenhead Borough hereby resolves as follows: That, for the purpose of providing the interest and other charges on a loan of £350, authorised to be raised by the Borough of Birkenhead, under the above-named Act, for the purpose of providing for the necessary cuttings, fillings, general construction, kerbing, channelling, acquiring land, compensation (if any), and incidental works rendered necessary in the carrying-out of the scheme for providing a suitable grade from the proposed wharf along the main road to a point at the upper side of Balk Road, according to the plans and specifications prepared by the Engineer, H. Munro Wilson, now lying at the office of the Town Clerk, the Birkenhead Borough Council hereby makes and levies a special rate of 8d. in the pound upon the rateable value of all rateable property of the Borough of Birkenhead, comprising Blocks 1, 2, 3, 57 to 67; Sections 1, 2, 3, 7 to 13, of Block 121, 128 to 164, and 23 to 230, all inclusive, of Blocks VII, XI, and XII, Waitemata Survey District; and that such special rate shall be an annual-recurring rate during the continuance of such loan, and be payable yearly on the 1st day of July in each and every year during the currency of such loan, being a period of forty-one years, or until the loan is fully paid off. The interest to be paid on the loan herein referred to is to be at the rate of 4 per cent. per annum.

NOTICE is hereby given that Court Havelock No. 5195, a branch of the United Otago District of the Ancient Order of Foresters’ Society, Register No. 10 (16), held at Waitahuna, is dissolved by instrument, registered at this office the 1st day of April, 1909, unless within three months from the date of the Gazette in which this advertisement appears proceedings be commenced by a member or other person interested in or having any claim on the funds of the society to set aside such dissolution, and the same is set aside accordingly.

AT a general meeting of members of the above society, duly convened, and held at the Mission Hall, Herbert Street, Wellington, on the 4th February, 1909, the following resolution was duly passed, and was at a subsequent general meeting, called together for that purpose and held at the same place, on the 8th March, 1909, duly confirmed :—

That the Wellington Central Mission (Incorporated) be wound up under the provisions of section 24 of “The Incorporated Societies Act, 1908”; and that the funds and property of the society (after payment of all liabilities of the society) be assigned, transferred, and set over to the Methodist Church in Australasia of New Zealand.

NOTICE is hereby given that the Partnership heretofore subsisting between us, the undersigned, JOSEPH GABRIEL BENTLEY and JOHN ABBOTT, carrying on business as Painters and Decorators, at No. 92 Moray Place, Dunedin, under the style or firm of “Bentley and Abbott,” was on the 25th day of March, 1909, dissolved by mutual consent. SCHOOL FOR DEAF-MUTES, SUMNER, NEAR CHRISTCHURCH.

Under the control and supervision of the Education Department.

Director: MR. J. E. STEVENS.

FOR Deaf Children of sound intellect. The pupils are taught to use and understand ordinary speech. The full charge for board and education is £40 a year, but less is accepted from parents who cannot afford to pay this amount. In case of necessity admission is free.

By the Education Act, the education of deaf children between the ages of 7 and 16 is made compulsory. A child is, as a rule, best fitted to begin the school course at about the age of 6, but advice should be obtained as soon as any sign of deafness is observed.

The following classes of deaf children are admitted:

  1. Children born deaf, or who have lost their hearing before learning to speak.
  2. Children who can hear a little, but are too deaf to be taught in an ordinary school.
  3. Children who have lost their hearing after having learned to speak.

Parents and other persons acquainted with such cases above the age of 4 are invited to communicate with the Director, or with
