THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE.

240 ft. S. 62° W. from the site of the old wooden tower, which has been taken down.
The new lighthouse stands on land 57 ft. above high-water mark. It consists of a square wooden dwelling, painted white, with an octagonal iron lantern, painted red, rising from the middle of its hip roof. The building is 37 ft. high from its base to the top of the ventilator on the lantern.
The light is a fifth-order dioptric fixed white light, elevated 89 ft. above high water and visible 15 miles.

JERVIS INLET.—NELSON ISLAND.—VANGUARD BAY.—UNCHARTED ROCK.—Mr. Maurice McMicken, master of the yacht “Lotus,” reports the existence of an uncharted rock, which dries 3 ft. and is unmarked by kelp, in Vanguard Bay, Jervis Inlet, on the following bearings:—
West entrance point of Vanguard Bay, N. 50° 35′ W.
East entrance point of Vanguard Bay, N. 3° E.
Larger of the small islands in Vanguard Bay, N. 42° 25′ E.
Smaller of the islands in Vanguard Bay, N. 81° 25′ E.
Approx. position : Lat. 49° 45′ 37″ N., long. 124° 06′ 35″ W.
CHILE.
MAGELLAN STRAIT.—PUNTA ARENAS.—LIGHT DISCONTINUED.—The Chilean Government has given notice that the fixed red light exhibited on the pontoon “Serena” at Punta Arenas has been discontinued.
Approx. position : Lat. 53° 10′ 48″ S., long. 70° 53′ 40″ W.
CHINA SEA.
BANKA ISLAND.—NORTH-EAST COAST.—LIAT BAY.—ROCK REPORTED.—The master of the Netherlands steamship “van Diemen” reports the existence of a rock, with a least depth of 2 fathoms over it, in Liat Bay, north-east coast of Banka Island, about 2,860 yards N. 72° E. from the mouth of the Rumutun River.
Approx. position on B.A. Chart No. 2597: Lat. 1° 49′ 18″ S., long. 106° 09′ 20″ E.
ANNAM.—KAM-RANH BAY ENTRANCE.—ROCK LOCATED.—The French Government has given notice that a rocky head, covered with 3 fathoms at low water, spring tides, has been found to exist northward of Hon Chut Island, Kam-ranh Bay entrance, Annam, on the following bearings:—
Hon Chut Lighthouse, S. 29° E.
Milieu Islet, summit, S. 33° W.
Approx. position : Lat. 11° 48′ 09″ N., long. 109° 12′ 50″ E.
NOTE.—This rock, surrounded by depths of less than 5½ fathoms, lies within the illuminated sector of Hon Chut light. Mariners should therefore avoid approaching the northern side of this island.
BANKA ISLAND.—KLABAT BAY.—BUOYS ESTABLISHED.—The Netherlands Government has given notice that the following buoys have been established to mark the channel in Klabat Bay, Banka Island:—
Three white conical buoys, 1,402 yards N. 1° E., 1,650 yards S. 61° E., and 4,095 yards S. 34° E., respectively, from the rock located 1 mile N. 66° 30′ W. from Morantong Point.
A black can buoy, 1,320 yards east from the same rock.
A black can buoy, 3,300 yards S. 49° E. from the same rock.
A black can buoy, 1,347 yards N. 28° W. from Mantong Point.
Approx. position of rock off Morantong Point on B.A. Chart No. 2597: Lat. 1° 34′ 30″ S., long. 105° 42′ 40″ E.
GULF OF SIAM.—SINGORA HARBOUR.—LIGHT ESTABLISHED.—Information dated 19th August, 1909, has been received from H.B.M. Consul-General at Bangkok that a fourth-order intermittent white light every 30 seconds—thus, light 25 seconds, eclipsed 5 seconds—visible 10 miles, has been established on Lem Sie Hill, southern side of the entrance to Singora Harbour, Gulf of Siam.
The light is exhibited from a white brick tower, 45 ft. high from base to centre of the lantern, located 120 yards N. 22° W. from the fort.
Approx. position : Lat. 7° 12′ 45″ N., long. 100° 35′ 30″ E.
GULF OF SIAM.—BANDON BIGHT.—KOH PRAP ISLAND.—LIGHT ESTABLISHED.—Referring to Notice to Mariners No. 10 (462) of 1907, further information, dated 19th August, 1909, has been received from H.B.M. Consul-General at Bangkok that a flashing white light every 140 seconds—thus, light 30 seconds, eclipsed 10 seconds, light 5 seconds, eclipsed 5 seconds, light 5 seconds, eclipsed 85 seconds—has been established on the summit of Koh Prap Island, Bandon Bight, Gulf of Siam.
The light is exhibited from a red lattice-work structure on pillars, 20 ft. high from base to centre of the lantern.

CHINA.
EAST COAST.—MEICHEN SOUND.—PINNACLE ROCK DISCOVERED.—The Japanese Government has given notice that a pinnacle rock about 3 ft. in extent, with 1 fathom over it, steep-to, but sloping somewhat to the northward, has been found to exist in Meichen Sound, east coast of China, on the following bearings:—
Ninepin Rock, S. 59° 40′ E., distant 3¼ miles.
Saddle Island, summit, N. 45° 50′ E.
Approx. position : Lat. 25° 03′ 50″ N., long. 119° 01′ 07″ E.
HAWAIIAN ISLANDS.
OAHU.—HONOLULU HARBOUR ENTRANCE.—CHANNEL LIGHT NO. 4 RE-ESTABLISHED.—BUOY WITHDRAWN.—Information has been received that channel light No. 4, Honolulu Harbour entrance, Hawaiian Islands, which was destroyed 21st July, 1908, and replaced by a buoy, has been re-established about 55 ft. to the eastward of its old position and 95 ft. from the edge of the dredged channel, on the following bearings:—
Crematory chimney, N. 61° 50′ E.
Quarantine Wharf, east tangent, N. 12° 20′ E.
Flagstaff in front of office, Quarantine Island, N. 23° 20′ W.
Channel buoy No. 4, temporarily moored to mark the position of the light structure, has been withdrawn.
HAWAII.—HILO BAY.—BREAKWATER UNDER CONSTRUCTION.—A breakwater is under construction by the U.S. Army Engineers at Hilo Bay, Hawaii, which, when completed, will be 9,700 ft. long. Work on the breakwater was begun in November, 1908, and 900 ft. have been completed. According to the present design the first section, 7,200 ft. long, will extend N. 57° 30′ W. from a point on the shore about 6,000 ft. eastward of Cocoanut Island, and the second section, 2,500 ft. long., in a S. 85° W. direction, the head of the completed structure being about 6,800 ft. N. 32° 45′ E. from Cocoanut Point light.
The breakwater will be 15 ft. wide on top and carried to a height of 9 ft. above mean low water. The outer face will have a slope of one and one-half in one, and the inner face a slope of one in one.
Work is progressing at the rate of 100 ft. per month, and it is expected to be completed in about 8 years.
OAHU.—MAKAPUU POINT.—LIGHT ESTABLISHED.—Referring to Notice to Mariners No. 38 (2122) of 1909, further notice is given that on 1st October, 1909, an intermittent white light every 9 seconds—thus, light 7½ seconds, eclipsed 1½ seconds—was established at Makapuu Point, the south-eastern extremity of Oahu Island.
The light is a hyper-radiant light (about two orders larger than a first-order light), and is exhibited 420 ft. above the water and 25 ft. above the ground, from a cylindrical, grey, cement tower 20 ft. in diameter at its base, surmounted by a black cylindrical lantern. The light is visible 27½ miles, over an arc of 248° from S. 56° 45′ E. to N. 11° 15′ E., but is obscured by Manana Island, over an arc of 10°, between the bearings S. 18° 45′ E. and S. 8° 45′ E., when passing close northward of the island.
There are three keepers’ dwellings about ¼ mile south-westward, and a water-tank about ⅕ mile west-south-westward of the lighthouse.

JAVA.
NORTH COAST—CHERIBON APPROACH.—LIGHT-BUOYS TO BE ESTABLISHED—LIGHT-VESSEL WITHDRAWN.—The Netherlands Government has given notice that the white conical buoy northward of Losari Point, north coast of Java, will be replaced by a white light-buoy exhibiting an intermittent white light every 20 seconds—thus, light 10 seconds, eclipsed 10 seconds—visible 6 miles.
Approx. position : Lat. 6° 44′ 54″ S., long. 108° 51′ 06″ E.
Cheribon light-vessel will be replaced by a white light-buoy exhibiting an intermittent white light every 20 seconds—thus, light 10 seconds, eclipsed 10 seconds—visible 6 miles.
The white conical buoy moored in (approximately) latitude 6° 30′ 18″ S., longitude 108° 43′ 12″ E., will be withdrawn.
SURABAYA STRAIT.—EAST CHANNEL.—BUOY DISAPPEARED.—The Netherlands Government has given notice that black can buoy No. 2, East Channel, Surabaya Strait, has disappeared. The buoy will not be replaced.
Approx. position : Lat. 7° 20′ 40″ S., long. 112° 53′ 48″ E.
SUMATRA.
EAST COAST.—RHIO STRAIT.—TIUNG STRAIT.—BUOY ESTABLISHED.—The Netherlands Government has given notice that a black can buoy has been established at the eastern entrance to Tiung Strait, Rhio Strait, east coast of Sumatra.
