SUMMARY FOR OCTOBER, 1909.

THE rainfall was not generally above the average for the month of October, although the weather was very unsettled most of the time, and a remarkable storm occurred on the 21st, 22nd, and 23rd, which brought heavy rain in most parts of the country, and especially the east coast of the South Island, where strong southerly gales, heavy rain, and snow occurred inland, and caused some severe losses. At this time the barometer was very low over the whole country, a westerly area of low pressure being followed by a low-pressure area from the north, and this accounted for the severity of the inflowing southerly winds. The rainfall was not so heavy at this time in the most southern districts, but colder weather and some severe frosts followed the disturbance.

AVERAGES DERIVED FROM THE MONTHLY CLIMATOLOGICAL TABLES FROM AUGUST, 1904, TO DECEMBER, 1908 (INCLUSIVE).
