THE following Notices to Mariners, received from the Marine Board at Port Adelaide, are published for general information.

J. A. MILLAR.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA.

SPENCER GULF.—NEAR PLANK POINT.

Masters of vessels, pilots, and others are hereby informed that the black beacon, with square head, marking the 3½-fathom shoal, 5 miles S.S.E. from Plank Point, has been removed, and placed 1¼ miles S. 5° W. of its former position, marking the south-eastern edge of a shoal which has 11 ft. on its shallowest part at L.W.S. tides. This shoal, which has recently been discovered, extends about 2½ cables N. and S., and 2 cables E. and W., with irregular soundings between it and the shore, but no less water to seaward.

Approximate position: Lat. 33° 33′ S., long. 137° 23′ E.
This affects Admiralty Chart No. 2389B.

ARTHUR SEARCY,
President of the Marine Board.

Marine Board Offices,
Port Adelaide, 25th October, 1909.

GULF ST. VINCENT.—YANKALILLA AND SECOND VALLEY.

Masters of vessels and others are informed that a warping-buoy, painted black, has been placed in 9 ft. L.W.S., at a distance of 100 fathoms off the end of Yankalilla Jetty, in a position about 30 fathoms to the northward of a direct line from the jetty.

Approximate position: Latitude 35° 27¼′ S., longitude 138° 18¼′ E.

Also that a warping-buoy, painted black, has been placed in 16 ft. L.W.S., 60 fathoms off the end of the Second Valley Jetty, in a position about 20 fathoms to the northward of a direct line from the jetty.

Approximate position: Latitude 35° 31′ S., longitude 138° 13¼′ E.

This affects Admiralty Chart No. 2389A.

ARTHUR SEARCY,
President of the Marine Board.

Notice to Mariners No. 104 of 1909.

ALTERATION OF MAN-OF-WAR ANCHORAGE IN AUCKLAND HARBOUR.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 26th November, 1909.

NOTICE is hereby given that owing to the extension of 500 ft. to the Railway Wharf the limits of the man-of-war anchorage in Auckland Harbour have been moved northward 300 ft., and in order to allow sufficient space for the fairway north of the wharf, ships anchoring within this limit should not anchor nearer than 1,350 ft. from the Railway Wharf.

Chart, &c., affected: Admiralty Plan No. 1970; “New Zealand Pilot,” eighth edition, 1908, Chapter ii, page 39; “New Zealand Nautical Almanac,” 1909, page 242, and page 119 of the 1910 Almanac.

J. A. MILLAR.

Notice to Mariners No. 105 of 1909.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 6th December, 1909.

THE following Notice to Mariners, received from the Marine Board, Port Adelaide, is published for general information.

J. A. MILLAR.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA.

Spencer Gulf.—Cockle Spit, Approach to Port Pirie.

REFERRING to Notices to Mariners Nos. 90 of 1905 and 35 of 1907, notice is hereby given that a pile beacon, carrying a clock-faced tide-gauge, has been erected on the eastern end of Cockle Spit, in 17 ft. L.W.S., near the position formerly occupied by the old tide-gauge.

The clock faces north-west ¼ north, and will be illuminated at night with all possible regularity, but, as from its exposed position difficulty may be experienced in attending to its lighting in bad weather, mariners are hereby warned not to trust to its being invariably illuminated under such conditions.

The dial is numbered from 0 to 11, beginning at the top and following round in the same direction as the figures on a clock, and the hand indicates the height above low water, spring tides. To ascertain the depth of water available in Port Pirie Creek, therefore, the rise indicated on the tide-gauge should be increased by 15 ft., the least present depth in the creek at L.W.S.

Approx. position: Lat. 33° 4′ S., long. 137° 58′ 30″ E.
Charts affected: 2389B and 403 (Admiralty).

ARTHUR SEARCY,
President of the Marine Board.

Marine Board Offices,
Port Adelaide, 8th November, 1909.

Additional Rules for Examination of Masters and Mates.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 1st December, 1909.

IN pursuance and exercise of the power vested in me by section 23 of “The Shipping and Seamen Act, 1908,” I do hereby make the following additional rules for the conduct of examinations for certificates of competency for masters and mates of foreign-going and home-trade ships.

J. A. MILLAR,
Minister of Marine.

RULES.

EXAMINATION IN CHART.

  1. On and after the 1st September, 1910, all candidates for certificates of competency as second mate of foreign-going ships or mate of home-trade passenger-ships will, in addition to the present chart questions for these grades, be required to answer in writing questions 6, 7 and 8 as given in Appendix G of the Regulations relating to the Examination of Masters and Mates in the Mercantile Marine (1906).

Candidates for certificates of competency as only or first mate will, in addition to the questions prescribed for second mate, be required to work a question in both current sailing and reduction to soundings (see 36 (d) of the regulations, 1906); and all candidates for certificates of competency as master or only or first mate of foreign-going ships, and master of home-trade passenger-ships, will be required to show proficiency in the method of fixing a ship’s position by horizontal sextant angles, using a station-pointer for plotting it on the chart.

SIGHT-TESTS.

  1. On and after the 1st January, 1914, the standard of form-vision required by the Marine Department will be raised. Candidates will then be tested with each eye separately, and will be required to possess full normal vision in one eye and at least half normal vision in the other.

No candidate who has obtained a certificate of competency before that date will be required to pass the higher standard on entering for a certificate of a higher grade, unless he wishes.

On and after the 1st March, 1910, any person serving or intending to serve in the mercantile marine or in fishing-vessels may be tested by the higher standard; and any holder of a certificate of competency who passes the new test may have the fact of his passing indorsed upon his certificate.
