LOCALITY AND DESCRIPTION.
Matakitaki Block is situated on the west bank of the Matakitaki River, extending back towards the watershed of the Maruia River.
The nearest point of the block is about two miles from the Town of Murchison, of which three-quarters of a mile is by a good coach-road to the bridge across the Matakitaki River, and the balance by an unformed road up the west bank of the river. The country is nearly all hilly, and covered with forest, chiefly red and brown birch, with good undergrowth of mixed scrub.
The formation is principally calcareous sandstone. The altitude ranges from 850 ft. to 2,400 ft. above sea-level.
The block is well watered, and the climate moderate. There are small flats of fair to good soil along the Matakitaki River and up Taylor’s Creek, and each subdivision contains a suitable homestead-site. The land is fairly well adapted for sheep-grazing. The nearest public school is situated at Murchison, where there are also two hotels, places of worship, stores, and a post and telegraph office.
As witness the hand of His Excellency the Governor, this seventh day of December, one thousand nine hundred and eight.
JAMES McGOWAN,
For Minister of Lands.
