signatures to such requisition represent a majority of the
occupiers of all pork-butchers' shops within the Borough of
Hastings:
Now, therefore, I, John Andrew Millar, Minister of
Labour, in pursuance of section 25 of "The Shops and
Offices Act, 1908," do hereby direct that from and after the
7th day of December, 1908, all pork-butchers' shops in the
Borough of Hastings shall be closed in accordance with such
requisition.
The notice gazetted the 21st day of May, 1908, fixing the
closing-hours of all shops in the borough is hereby varied
accordingly.

Varied Notice fixing Closing-hours of certain Shops in the
Borough of Winton under the Shops and Offices Act.

WHEREAS requisitions in writing, signed by a majority
of the occupiers of all the shops in each of the
trades specified in the Schedule hereto in the Borough of
Winton, have been forwarded to me, desiring that the hours
for closing of all such shops in those trades shall be fixed as
set out in the said Schedule: And whereas the Winton
Borough Council has certified that the signatures to such
requisitions comprise a majority of the shopkeepers in each
of the trades specified, both combined and separately, within
the borough :
Now, therefore, I, John Andrew Millar, Minister of
Labour, in pursuance of section 25 of "The Shops and
Offices Act, 1908," do hereby direct that from and after the
7th day of December, 1908, all shops in each of the trades
specified in the Schedule below, both combined and sepa-
rately, in the Borough of Winton, shall be closed in accord-
ance with such requisitions, and that the Gazette notice
dated the 27th day of June, 1907, fixing closing-hours of all
shops in the said borough is hereby varied accordingly.

Chemists .. 1 p.m.; open again in evening, 7 to 9 p.m., for sale of medicines and surgical appli-ances only (sec. 8, a) 9.30 p.m. 8 p.m.; Sun-day hours, open 12 noon to 1 p.m., and 8 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Tobacconists and hair-dressers 1 p.m. .. .. 10.30 p.m. 8 p.m.
Confectioners and refresh-ment-room-keepers .. .. 11.30 p.m. 11 p.m.

Notice of the Taking and Laying-off of Roads through Motu-
waireka Block, Wellington Land District.

NOTICE is hereby given, by direction of His Excellency
the Governor of the Dominion of New Zealand,
under the authority of section 93 of "The Public Works
Act, 1908," that the roads described in the Schedule hereto
were duly taken and laid off through the lands specified in
the said Schedule, under the authority of the Governor of
the said Dominion, by Warrant dated the 11th April, 1908.

Subsidies to Public Libraries.

Education Department,
Wellington, 6th October, 1908.
NOTICE is hereby given that the sum of £3,000 has
been voted by Parliament for distribution to public
libraries.
The distribution will take place on the 4th February,
1909, and no claim will be entitled to consideration that
shall not have been sent in in due form and received by
the Secretary for Education, Wellington, on or before the
27th January, 1909.

  1. A library to be entitled to a subsidy must be public
    in the sense of belonging to the public, and of not being
    under the control of an association, society, or club whose
    membership is composed of a section of the community
    only, and if within a borough it must be open to the
    public free of charge. The receipts for the year from
    subscriptions and donations must not have been less than
    £2, exclusive of moneys received from endowments, or
    from Government, or from Borough or County Councils,
    or for special building purposes, or as rent, hire, or
    consideration for the use of any room, or building, or
    land belonging to the institution, in respect of none of
    which will subsidy be allowed. The net proceeds of
    concerts, lectures, or other entertainments on behalf of
    the current expenses of the library will be regarded as
    voluntary contributions. A subsidy will not be given to
    more than one library in the same town.
  2. In the division of the vote a nominal addition of
    £25 will be made to the amount of the income of each
    library derived from subscriptions, donations, and rates,
    and the vote will be divided according to the amounts
    thus augmented; but no library will receive credit for a
    larger income than £75—that is, in no case will the
    augmented amount on which distribution is based exceed
    £100.
  3. The whole of the subsidy must be expended without
    delay in the purchase of books for the library.
  4. Application to share in the distribution must be by
    means of a statutory declaration by the Chairman, or Sec-
    retary, or Treasurer of the institution on behalf of which
    it is made, and must be accompanied by a statement of
    the receipts and expenditure of the institution for the
    year ending on the 31st day of December, 1908; and
    such declaration must be on the form provided for the
    purpose, which form shall be as follows :—

DECLARATION.
I, [Name], of [Place of abode], [Occupation], do
solemnly and sincerely declare that I am Chairman [or
Secretary, or Treasurer
] of the [Name of institution];
that during the year ending on the 31st day of December,
1908, the receipts of the aforesaid institution for the
maintenance of the library only were as follows : From
rates levied by a local governing body under Part I of
"The Libraries and Mechanics' Institutes Act, 1908,"
or "The Municipal Corporations Act, 1908,"
pounds      shillings and      pence; from the sub-
scriptions of members,      pounds      shillings and
      pence; and from voluntary contributions other
than members' subscriptions,      pounds      shil-
lings and      pence; that the library is public in the
