I HEREBY give notice that at the poll taken on the 11th November, 1908, on the proposal to borrow £9,430 to carry out various works in this county, the following is a statement of the votes recorded: For the proposal, 183; against the proposal, 187; informal, 4.

I therefore declare the proposal not carried.

Notice to Mariners No. 89 of 1908.

THE following Notices to Mariners, received from the Hydrographic Office, Washington, D.C., U.S.A., are published for general information.

CALIFORNIA.

POINT ARENA LIGHT-STATION. — NEW LIGHT ESTABLISHED.— Referring to previous Notices to Mariners, further notice is given that on 15th September, 1908, a 1st-order flashing white light, showing 1 group of 2 short flashes every 6 seconds, was established in the cylindrical concrete tower recently erected at Point Arena Light-station, California, and the old 3rd-order fixed white light was discontinued.

The new light is exhibited 155 ft. above high water, and is visible 18½ miles in clear weather.

Approx. position: Lat. 38° 57′ 19″ N., long. 123° 44′ 24″ W.

SAN FRANCISCO BAY.—SAN PABLO BAY.—BEACON REPLACED BY BUOY. — Referring to previous Notices to Mariners, further notice is given that on 17th September, 1908, San Pablo dredged channel buoy No. 13, a black first-class spar, was established in 25 ft. of water in San Pablo Bay, California, in place of San Pablo Bay dredged channel beacon No. 13, which was reported missing.

The buoy is located on the following bearings:—
Mare Island Lighthouse, N. 66° 15′ E.
Point Refugio Wharf, right tangent, S. 7° E.
Pinole Point, right tangent, S. 49° 30′ W.


OREGON.

COLUMBIA RIVER ENTRANCE. — SOUTH CHANNEL. — BUOYS ESTABLISHED AND CHANGED IN POSITION. — On 22nd August, 1908, South Channel bell buoy, perpendicularly striped, marked S.C. in black, moored at the entrance to the Columbia River, Oregon, was moved to the southward and re-established in 102 ft. of water on the following bearings:—
Cape Disappointment Light, N. 31° 51′ E.
Point Adams unused lighthouse, S. 86° 17′ E.
North Head Lighthouse, N. 16° 23′ E.

Also on the same date a perpendicularly striped first-class tall-type nun buoy was established in 73 ft. of water on the following bearings:—
Cape Disappointment Lighthouse, N. 33° 15′ E.
Point Adams unused lighthouse, S. 79° 57′ E.
North Head Lighthouse, N. 15° 40′ E.

COLUMBIA RIVER LIGHT-VESSEL NO. 50.—CORRECTED POSITION. —Referring to previous Notices to Mariners, further notice is given that Columbia River light-vessel No. 50 is moored in 192 ft. of water off the entrance to the Columbia River, Oregon, on the following bearings:—
North Head Lighthouse, N. 34° 39′ E.
Cape Disappointment Lighthouse, N. 48° 43′ E.
Point Adams unused lighthouse, S. 87° 41′ E.
Approx. position: Lat. 46° 11′ 54″ N., long. 124° 10′ 43″ W.


Notice fixing Closing-hours of Watchmakers and Jewellers’ Shops in the Borough of Waihi under the Shops and Offices Act.

WHEREAS a requisition in writing, signed by a majority of the occupiers of all the watchmakers and jewellers’ shops in the Borough of Waihi, has been forwarded to me, desiring that the hours for closing of shops in those trades in the borough shall be fixed as follows: Every evening, Saturdays excepted, at the hour of 6 o’clock, except during the weeks in which Christmas and New Year’s Day are observed, when the hour of closing shall be not later than 10.30 each evening: And whereas the Waihi Borough Council has certified that the signatures to such requisition represent a majority of the persons carrying on business as watchmakers and jewellers, combined and separately, within the borough:

Now, therefore, I, John George Findlay, acting for and on behalf of the Minister of Labour, in pursuance of section 25 of “The Shops and Offices Act, 1908,” do hereby direct that from and after the 30th day of November, 1908, all watchmakers and jewellers’ shops, combined and separate, in the Borough of Waihi shall be closed in accordance with such requisition, except on the statutory half-holiday, when all such shops shall be closed at 1 p.m.

Authorising the Laying-off of King Street, in the Township of Taradale Extension No. 5, of a Width of not less than 66 ft.

IN pursuance of the power and authority conferred upon me by section 15 of “The Land Act, 1908,” I, Robert McNab, Minister of Lands, do hereby authorise the laying-off of King Street, in the Township of Taradale Extension No. 5, Hawke’s Bay Land District, of a width of not less than 66 ft.

IN pursuance of the power and authority conferred upon me by section 15 of “The Land Act, 1908,” I, Robert McNab, Minister of Lands, do hereby authorise the laying-off of Garage Street, in the Township of Waipukurau Extension No. 11, Hawke’s Bay Land District, of a width of not less than 66 ft., instead of 99 ft.

Subsidies to Public Libraries.

Education Department,
Wellington, 6th October, 1908.

NOTICE is hereby given that the sum of £3,000 has been voted by Parliament for distribution to public libraries.

The distribution will take place on the 4th February, 1909, and no claim will be entitled to consideration that shall not have been sent in in due form and received by the Secretary for Education, Wellington, on or before the 27th January, 1909.

  1. A library to be entitled to a subsidy must be public in the sense of belonging to the public, and of not being under the control of an association, society, or club whose membership is composed of a section of the community only, and if within a borough it must be open to the public free of charge. The receipts for the year from subscriptions and donations must not have been less than £2, exclusive of moneys received from endowments, or from Government, or from Borough or County Councils, or for special building purposes, or as rent, hire, or consideration for the use of any room, or building, or land belonging to the institution, in respect of none of which will subsidy be allowed.
