Pensions and Compassionate Allowances for the Widows, Children, and other Dependent Relatives of Officers and Soldiers of Oversea Colonial Contingents which served in South Africa.
Defence Office,
Wellington, 31st January, 1908.
THE following despatch, received from the Secretary of State for the Colonies, together with the Royal Warrant referred to therein, is published for general information.
J. G. WARD,
Minister of Defence.
(New Zealand.—Miscellaneous.)
Colonial Office, S.W., 7th November, 1907.
My Lord,—With reference to my Predecessor’s despatch, “General,” of the 12th of December, 1902, respecting the grant of pensions to widows and children of soldiers of oversea Colonial Contingents whose deaths occurred through serving in the war in South Africa, I have the honour to state for the information of your Government that the limit of time within which the death from War Service of an Officer, Warrant Officer, or Soldier must occur in order that his family may be eligible for pension, &c., from Army Funds has been extended from two to seven years from the date of removal from duty for wounds, injuries, or disease.
I enclose five copies of the Special Army Order of 9th October, 1907, in which the Royal Warrant providing for this extension was issued, and I have to point out that, in connection with the investigation of any fresh claims to pension which may arise under the amended rule, it is of importance that there should be a continuous history of disease clearly connecting the man’s death with his War Service. The Army Council ask that the evidence on which any further pensions may be granted may be forwarded for their information when the award of pension is submitted for confirmation.
I have, &c.,
ELGIN.
Governor the Right Honourable Lord Plunket,
K.C.M.G., K.C.V.O., &c.
War Office, 9th October, 1907.
I. ROYAL WARRANT.
Pensions and Compassionate Allowances for the Widows, Children, and other Dependent Relatives of Officers and Soldiers.
EDWARD, R.I.
Whereas We deem it expedient to extend the period within which the death of an officer or soldier from wounds or injuries received in the performance of military duty, or from disease contracted or commencing while on active service, must occur in order that his widow, children, or other dependent relatives may be eligible for pension or compassionate allowances:
Our Will and Pleasure is that the period laid down in Our Warrant of the 30th August, 1907, shall be extended from two years to seven years, and that Our said Warrant be amended accordingly, and be held to apply to all cases where such wounds or injuries were received, or such disease was contracted or commenced, on or after the 11th October, 1899, and to all the classes specified in Our Warrant of the 25th June, 1901; but no award of pension or allowance made in pursuance thereof shall have effect from a date earlier than the 1st October, 1907.
Given at Our Court at Balmoral, this 5th day of October, 1907, in the 7th year of Our Reign.
By His Majesty’s Command.
R. B. HALDANE.
