Opening National Endowment Lands in Auckland Land District for Selection.
PLUNKET, Governor.
IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities conferred upon me by “The Land Act, 1892,” and its amendments, I, William Lee, Baron Plunket, the Governor of the Dominion of New Zealand, do hereby declare that the national endowment lands described in the Schedule hereto shall be open for selection on renewable lease on Wednesday, the twenty-fifth day of March, one thousand nine hundred and eight, at the rentals mentioned in the said Schedule; and I do also declare that the said lands shall be leased under and subject to the provisions of “The Land Act, 1892,” and “The National Endowment Act, 1907.”

Some small flats on the bank of the Awaroa Stream; balance undulating and broken land, covered with mixed forest, comprising taraire, puriri, miro, rimu, kahikatea, and some small scattered totara, and a few kauri-trees. Soil of fair second-class quality, on sandstone formation. Well watered. Situated about four miles from Takahue Post-office by formed horse-track (Takahue—Herekino Road).

Altitude, from 200 ft. to 800 ft. above sea-level. Undulating to very broken land, with about 40 acres gentle slopes on Section 24, and 10 acres level land on Section 22; 80 acres manuka scrub on Section 21; balance of sections covered with mixed forest, comprising kauri, totara, rimu, kahikatea, birch, taraire, rata, and tawa, with dense undergrowth of ferns, nikau, toetoe, and kiekie; the kauri, which is scattered and difficult of access, amounts to about 90,000 super. feet on Sections 21 and 22, and about 50,000 super. feet each on Sections 23 and 24. Soil, a mixed loam and clay of fair quality, on sandstone formation. Well watered. Section 21 is distant three miles from Helena Bay by bridle-track, and ten miles from Whakapara Railway-station—eight miles by dray-road and two miles bridle-track; Sections 23 and 24 are from four to five miles from Helena Bay by bridle-track; and ten to eleven miles from Whakapara Railway-station—ten miles by dray-road, balance bridle-track.
BAY OF ISLANDS COUNTY.—RUSSELL SURVEY DISTRICT.

Altitude, from 300 ft. to 600 ft. above sea-level. Broken land, covered with mixed forest, comprising rimu, rata, towai, manuka, and some scattered kauri and totara, with undergrowth of supplejack, kiekie, and shrubs. Soil, clay and loam from inferior to fair quality, on sandstone formation. Well watered by streams. Distant about twelve miles from Hukerenui Railway-station—two miles and a half by formed road, nine miles dray-road, half-mile bridle-track.

About two-thirds flat, remainder low hills. About 65 acres cleared and laid down in grass, 16 acres drainable swamp, remainder covered with birch and rata bush of little value. Access by road, distant about four miles from Town of Charleston.
SECOND-CLASS LANDS.
Buller County.—Inangahua Survey District.

Mixed agricultural and pastoral land; fair soil. Altitude, from 150 ft. to 1,300 ft. All under forest, comprising matai, rimu, kahikatea, red-birch, brown-birch, and totara. Well watered. Situated about four miles and a half from Inangahua Junction. Accessible by Main Buller Road.

Watered by Landing Creek; portions liable to be flooded. Access by Westport—Reefton Road, distant about twelve miles and a half from Reefton Railway-station.

About three-quarters of each of these sections is bush-covered, principally brown-birch, white-birch, and silver-birch, with a little matai near frontage, and white-pine near swampy parts; remainder swamp, covered with short flax, rushes, and swamp-grass. Soil inferior and heavily mossed. Access by Westport—Reefton Road, distant about ten miles and a half from Reefton Railway-station.

The bulk of this section is covered with light bush of manuka, lacewood, kowhai, and brown-birch; about 1½ acres of flax near Boatman’s Creek, and about 6 acres of grass and clover (good feed); soil thin and stony in middle of section, other parts good; liable to flood in places when the river is very high. Access by Westport—Reefton Road and by-road, distant about eight miles from Reefton Railway-station.
