THE following Notices to Mariners, received from the Board of Trade, London, are published for general information.

BAY OF BENGAL.

RIVER HUGLI ENTR.—The new lt.-v. intended to replace the intermediate lt.-v. (21° 14' N., 88° 11' E.) having been destroyed by an explosion, this station is marked by a lt.-v. similar in char. to the original lt.-v. Aug.

SANDOWAY RIVER APPROACH.—The red conical buoy in 18° 32½' N., 94° 12¼' E., on S. side of Drunken Sailor Rk., has been withdrawn. Aug.

EASTERN ARCHIPELAGO, ETC.

BANKA STRAIT.—A F. red lt., elev. 22 ft., R. 8 miles, is exh. in 3° 03' S., 106° 27½' E., on the mole-head at Tobo Ali, Banka Isl., about 275 yd. wrd. from the fort flagstaff. Aug.

MACCLESFIELD CHAN.—A rk., which dries at L.W., is reported to exist in 2° 59' S., 106° 55' E., within the 3-fms. contour, ern. side of Pulo Lepar. The above position is approx. only, and the rk. is probably that charted ½ mile srd. Aug.

PEKALONGAN.—A F. red lt. is exh. in 6° 51½' S., 109° 41' E., on the E. harb.-head, and a F. green lt. on the W. harb.- head. Aug.

SURABAYA STRAIT.—The red conical buoy, surm. by a ball, in 6° 51½' S., 112° 33¾' E., marking the nrn. edge of the bank off Ujung Panka, nrn. entr. to the strait, has been replaced by a white lt.-buoy, exh. an occ. white lt., vis. 10 secs., ecl. 10 secs. Aug.

NEW ZEALAND.
Outlying Islands.

CHATHAM ISLS.—PETRE BAY.—A rk., which breaks with a wly. swell, exists in 43° 51½' S., 176° 46½' W., in the approach to Port Hutt, with the wrn. entr. pt. of Ocean Bay N. 34° E. 1⅜ miles, and Matakitiaki Hill N. 35° W. The above position is very approx., there being no opportunity to fix the rk. accurately. Aug.

SOUTH AMERICA.

SANDY PT. (PTA. ARENAS).—The refuge beacon on Sandy Pt. is incorrectly shown on the chart; it is in 53° 8¼' S., 70° 51¼' W., on the cliff above Sandy Pt., 1¼ cables N. 71° W. from the charted position. Also, foul ground is situated 6 cables S.-erd. from the old boathouse "Foul ground" has been charted in the above position. The wreckage of H.M.S. "Doteral" is still dangerous, and vessels anchoring in its vicinity are liable to lose their anchors. It is proposed to mark this position by a wrk.-buoy. The station-ship prev. moored in Sandy Pt. road has been withdrawn. Aug.

MONTE VIDEO BAY.—A lt.-buoy exh. a F. red lt. is moored 2 cables N. 59° W. from the Customhouse flagstaff (34° 54½' S., 56° 12¼' W.), in place of the buoy prev. in this position. A small mooring-buoy, black and white, lies with the Customhouse flagstaff S. 44° E. 6⅓ cables, and the highest Familia Rk. N. 67° E. The red conical buoy 3½ cables N. 46° W. from the Customhouse flagstaff has been disc. Aug.

RIO GRANDE DO SUL ENTR.—A rk., which breaks, exists in 31° 56' S., 51° 33' W., N.-erd. of the entr., about 5 miles from the shore abreast of Estreito Beach. The exact position of this rk. is doubtful, and the depth over it is not known; it has been marked "P.D." on the chart. Aug.

Notice fixing Closing-hours of General Storekeepers' Shops in the Riccarton Road District under the Shops and Offices Act.

WHEREAS a requisition in writing, signed by a majority of the occupiers of all the retail general storekeepers' shops in the Riccarton Road District, has been forwarded to me, desiring that the hours of closing shops in the road district in their trade shall be fixed as follows:

On Thursdays at 1 p.m., on Saturdays at 10 p.m., on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 8 p.m., and that shops will not be closed until 8 p.m. on the Thursday in any week wherein a statutory or general holiday shall occur:

And whereas the Riccarton Road Board has certified that the signatures to such requisition represent a majority of the occupiers of all general stores within the Riccarton Road District:

Now, therefore, I, John Andrew Millar, the Minister of Labour, in pursuance of section 25 of "The Shops and Offices Act, 1908," do hereby direct that from and after the 12th day of October, 1908, all retail general storekeepers' shops in the Riccarton Road District shall be closed in accordance with such requisition.

Authorising the Laying-off of Cottle Road and Gordon Road, in the Township of Taita Extension No. 1, of a Width of not less than 66 ft. each.

IN pursuance of the power and authority conferred upon me by section 15 of "The Land Act, 1908," I, Robert McNab, Minister of Lands, do hereby authorise the laying-off of Cottle Road and Gordon Road, in the Township of Taita Extension No. 1, Wellington Land District, of a width of not less than 66 ft. each, instead of 99 ft.

IN pursuance of the powers vested in me by "The Infants Act, 1908," I, George Fowlds, Minister of Education, do hereby appoint the senior sergeant or constable at each police-station within the Dominion of New Zealand to take proceedings for breaches of sections 41, 43, 45, 46, 49, and 50 of the said Act.

First Meeting of the Gore High School Board.

IN terms of the scheme for the control of the Gore High School, it is hereby notified that Tuesday, the 13th October, 1908, at 1.30 p.m., and the Borough Council Chambers, Gore, shall be the time and place of the first meeting of the Board, and that Mr. Frank Young preside thereat during the election of Chairman.

Subsidies to Public Libraries.

NOTICE is hereby given that the sum of £3,000 has been voted by Parliament for distribution to public libraries.

The distribution will take place on the 4th February, 1909, and no claim will be entitled to consideration that shall not have been sent in in due form and received by the Secretary for Education, Wellington, on or before the 27th January, 1909.
