THE following Notice to Mariners, received from the Portmaster, Brisbane, Queensland, is published for general information.
INNER ROUTE.-TORRES STRAIT.
COMMANDER Pasco, R.N., H.M.S., "Fantome," reports that the shoal marked 5 fathoms, S.W. side of Sudbury Reef, in lat. 17° 0' 48" S., long. 146° 8' 8" E., carries a coral head in 1½ fathoms, with shoal water 3½ fathoms extending S. 24° E. 6 cables.

Additions to Rules for the Examination of Home-trade Masters.

IN pursuance and exercise of the powers vested in me by section 23 of “The Shipping and Seamen Act, 1903,” I do hereby make the following additions to clause 60 of the rules for the examination of masters and mates, which were made on the 30th day of May, 1906, and published in the New Zealand Gazette No. 43, of the 7th day of the following month, viz.:—
(e.) Or, one year must have been as master of a cargo-vessel plying in the home trade or extended river limits whilst holding a certificate of competency as master of a fishing-boat or cargo-vessel under 25 tons register;
(f.) Or, one year must have been as master of a vessel of 50 tons register or upwards plying in the home trade or extended river limits whilst holding a certificate of service as master of a vessel of 50 tons register or upwards;
(g.) Or, one year and a half must have been as master of a vessel plying in the home trade or extended river limits whilst holding a certificate of service as master of a vessel under 50 tons register.

Defining Wellington Extended River Limits for Tugs.
IN pursuance and exercise of the power and authority conferred upon me by section 189 of “The Shipping and Seamen Act, 1903,” I, John Andrew Millar, Minister of Marine, do hereby define the Wellington restricted limits within which extended river tugs propelled by steam, gas, oil, fluid, electricity, or any mechanical power other than steam may ply to be inside a right line drawn from the outermost point of Taurakirae Head to the outermost point of Sinclair Head.

Te Makarini Scholarships, held at Te Aute College, Hawke’s Bay.
THREE scholarships of the yearly value of £35, tenable for two years, are offered for competition. One of these scholarships, to be called the senior scholarship, is open to all Maori boys not over sixteen years of age at the end of the month preceding the date of the examination: the other two scholarships are junior scholarships, one of which is open to all Maori boys under fifteen years of age at the end of the month preceding the date of the examination who have attended a Native school or schools under the control of the Education Department, and whose attendance at school during the previous year is considered by the Inspector of Native Schools to have been satisfactory; the other is open on similar conditions to Maori boys whose attendance at any school other than Te Aute and St. Stephen’s during the previous year has been satisfactory. The scholarships are open to Maori boys on the conditions laid down in the regulations of the Trustees of the Te Makarini Scholarships Fund, as printed in the Appendix to the Native Schools Code, 1908. The examination will be held at convenient centres on the 7th and 8th of December, 1908.
Candidates must, either directly or through their teachers, send notice to the Inspector of Native Schools, Education Department, Wellington, of their intention to present themselves for examination. Such notice must be posted so as to reach the Department not later than the 26th of October, 1908.
Copies of the regulations and forms of notice may be obtained from teachers of Native schools and boarding institutions, the Secretaries to Education Boards, or the Secretary for Education, Wellington.
