PACIFIC OCEAN.
TUPÉTI PASSAGE.—A rk., Cerciat Rk., carrying 2½., exists in 21° 35½' S., 166° 23½' E., in the passage, with Kinde Isl. S. 60° W. 1½ miles, and Nileuti Isl. N. 57° W. May.
PALAO OR PELEW ISLS.—Kiel Isl., reported to lie in 7° 15' N., 134° 0' E., off the W. coast of Palao Isls., has been searched for unsucc., and erased from the charts. May.
WOLEA (ULIE) ISLS.—A sand cav, 2 cables in extent, has formed on the reef in 7° 21½' N., 143° 55½' E., about 2 miles W. by S. ½ S. from the S. pt. of Raur Isl., in the approach to Wolea Lagoon. May.
LAMOTREK, ELATO, AND OLIMARO ISLS.—These isls. are 8½ miles wrd. of their prev. charted positions. The group of isls., with the surrounding islets and dangers, have been moved on the charts as a whole 8½ miles to the wrd. The S.E. pt. of Lamotrek Isl. is in 7° 27' N., 146° 22' E. May.
CONDOR BANK.—A coral bank, named Condor Bank, estimated to extend 3 miles E. and W., 6 miles N. and S., and carrying 12 to 13 fms., exists in 7° 26' N., 148° 7' E., wrd. of Enderby Isl. April.
PONAPI.—PORT SANTIAGO (LANGAR HARB.)—The two mooring-buoys in the port 1½ cables and 6½ cables respectively S.-wrd. from Langar Isl. pier-head (6° 59½' N., 158° 17½' E.) do not now exist. Port Santiago is also known as Langar Harb.; the latter has been placed on the chart as an alternative name. May.
PONAPI.—PORT METALANIM.—The true meridian of the plan of this port (6° 52' N., 158° 24' E.) is represented by a line drawn about N. 12° W. from the vert. margin of the chart; in other words, the vert. margin of the plan is N. 12° E. (true). A line in this direction (N. 12° W.) has been placed on the plan and marked "Approx. True Meridian." May.

CHILE.
MAGELLAN STRAIT.—DESOlATION ISLAND.—FELIX POINT LIGHTHOUSE.—CHANGE IN COLOUR.—Referring to Notice to Mariners No. 18 (696) of 1908, the Chilean Government has given further notice that the colour of Felix Point Light-house has been changed from red to red and white in horizontal bands.
Approximate position on H.O. Chart No. 446 : Lat. 52° 58' 00" S., long. 74° 04' 45" W.
VALPARAISO HARBOUR APPROACH.—ANJELES POINT.—NEW LIGHT EXHIBITED.—PROVISIONAL LIGHT WITHDRAWN.—The Chilean Government has given notice that on 1st July, 1908, a group-flashing white light, showing 1 group of 3 flashes every 15 seconds, will be exhibited from a white, cylindrical, iron tower with green cupola, erected on the site of the old lighthouse on Angeles Point, Valparaiso Harbour approach, Chile, and the provisional light now exhibited will be withdrawn.
The new light will be elevated 185 ft. above sea-level, and will be visible 20 miles. No further notice will be given.
Approx. position : Lat. 33° 01' 08" S., long. 71° 38' 52" W.
CALIFORNIA.
SAN FRANCISCO LIGHT-VESSEL No. 70 TO BE REPLACED BY LIGHT-BUOY.—Referring to Notice to Mariners No. 18 (698) of 1908, further notice is given that about 18th May, 1908, San Francisco light-vessel No. 70, stationed about 3¼ miles outside the bar off the entrance to San Francisco Harbour, 10½ miles S. 72° 20'.W. true (S.W. ⅞ W. mag.) from Fort Point Lighthouse and about 500 ft. northward of the range line marked by Fort Point and Alcatraz lights, will be withdrawn from her station for repairs, and the station will be temporarily marked by a gas buoy painted red, with light-vessel moorings in black, and showing a fixed white light.
Approx. position : Lat. 37° 44' 56" N., long. 122° 41' 38" W.
CAPE MENDOCINO.—BLUNTS REEF LIGHT-VESSEL No. 83.—SUBMARINE FOG-BELL ESTABLISHED.—About 23rd May, 1908, a submarine fog-signal bell will be established on board Blunts Reef light-vessel No. 83, stationed 1⅞ miles S. 61° 20' W. true (S.W. ½ S. mag.) from Blunts Reef, off the sea-coast of California, and 4½ miles S. 85° W. true (S.W. by
W. ⅞ W. w'ly mag.) from Cape Mendocino Lighthouse. After the above date this bell will sound, during thick or foggy weather, the number 83 at regular intervals—thus, 8 strokes, silent interval 3 seconds, 8 strokes, silent interval 5½ seconds.

SUNKEN ROCK OFF TAUMAKI OR OPEN BAY ISLET, WEST COAST OF SOUTH ISLAND.

CAPTAIN Bollons of the Government s.s. "Hinemoa" reports the existence of a dangerous sunken rock on the western seaward side of Open Bay Islet.
The sea breaks heavily over the rock in westerly gales. On the 13th June, during an exceptionally hard north-east to west-north-west gale, it was breaking at high water and continuously throughout the day. From the peaked southern islet the rock lies S. 89° W. correct magnetic, distant one mile six and a half cables from that islet.

Gorse declared to be a Noxious Weed in the Town of Rotorua.

IT is hereby notified for public information that the Department of Tourist and Health Resorts (as the local authority in respect of the Town of Rotorua) has declared gorse to be a noxious weed within the meaning of "The Noxious Weeds Act, 1900," in the Town of Rotorua.

Notice of Date of Examination.

NOTICE is hereby given that a Civil Service Junior Examination and a Junior National Scholarship and Free Place Examination will be held in December, 1908, beginning on or about the 9th day of the month; and that a Civil Service Senior Examination and an examination for teachers' certificates of Class C and Class D will be held in January, 1909, beginning on or about the 5th day of the month.
The Civil Service Junior Examination is a qualifying examination for senior free places in secondary schools and district high schools; also it is the First Examination for pupil-teachers.
With the Junior National Scholarship examination will be taken the Junior Free Place examination (including the examination for junior free places in technical schools), and candidates may qualify for junior free places in either examination.
Entries for Junior National Scholarships and for Junior and Senior Free Places must be made through the principals or head teachers of the schools attended, and will be received by Secretaries of Education Boards not later than the 30th September, 1908.
Entries for other examinations will be received by the Inspector-General of Schools, at Wellington, until the 30th September, 1908, or, with a late fee of £1 in addition to the ordinary fee, until the 15th October, 1908.
All entries must be made on the proper forms, which may be obtained later from the office of any Education Board or of the Education Department.
Candidates for Senior National Scholarships are reminded that, in forwarding to the University authorities their application to be admitted to the examination for a Junior University Scholarship, they must at the same time give notice of their intention to compete for a Senior National Scholarship.
Candidates who have to pass in elementary handwriting for the teachers' certificate are examined at various times and places. Those who desire to be examined in good time in this subject are recommended to apply early.
