heavy to light forest of rata, tawa, rimu, hinau, with scrub
and fern. The flats near the Otunui have deposits of pumice.
Soil fair to good, on papa formation. Well watered. Eleva-
tion, 600 ft. to 1,800 ft. above sea-level.

General Description.

This block is situated between Taumarunui and Matire
and Mangaroa, the western boundary being about eleven
miles from Mangaroa, and the eastern boundary about five
miles from Taumarunui. The northern portion is about ten
miles from Matire—six miles formed dray-road, remainder
walking-track. From Taumarunui via Kururau Road the
block is accessible by a good horse-track. It will also be
accessible from the steamer landing on the Wanganui River
by the Otunui Road, when formed. Of the distance from
Mangaroa via Ohura and Waitangata Roads, nine miles is
dray-road, the remainder walking-track.

The land varies from steep hills to easy slopes and flat
country, the latter being found along the larger streams.
On these flats, noticeably on the Otunui and Whakamaro
Streams, there are heavy deposits of pumice. The frontages
to roads are good, and homestead-sites easily accessible from
the roads are to be found on each section, with the exception
of Section 5, Block I, Piopiotea West. The spurs in most
sections, being fairly broad, can be easily fenced; the sections
generally lie well to the sun, and are well watered by per-
manent streams, which can be crossed everywhere, there
being no gorges.

The soil is a brown loam of a good depth, with yellow-clay
subsoil. Formation, blue papa. sandy on hilltops.

The forest is heavy throughout, with an occasional light-
bush spur, and consists chiefly of tawa, rimu, rata, kahikatea,
hinau, with soft woods and thick undergrowth. Totara
suitable for fencing is scattered over the sections. On some
of the higher spurs beech appears, though lower down there
is the usual growth of mixed forest. The fords at the river-
crossings are good, and the road-grades easy.

The climate is mild—not much wind, ample rainfall, and
ordinary frosts.

The block as a whole may be classed as good pastoral land,
well adapted for sheep and cattle grazing.

As witness the hand of His Excellency the Governor,
this twentieth day of March, one thousand nine
hundred and eight.

Minister of Lands.
