- The remaining suburbs do not lie within borough boundaries, and particulars respecting them have not been obtained for the Vital Statistics.
Deaths occurring at hospitals, of persons not residents of the borough wherein the hospital is situated, have been allotted in each case to the borough where the disease was contracted, and not to that in which the death actually took place.
The total births in the above boroughs amounted to 681, against 609 in December—an increase of 72. The deaths in January were 234, an increase of 14 on the number in December. Of the total deaths, males contributed 132, females 102. Eighty-five of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 36·32 per cent. of the whole number; 73 of these were under one year of age.
There were forty-five deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: Nine men, 66, 69, 70, 73, 74, 76, 77 (two), 81, and six women, 65, 74, 75, 76 (two), 77, died at Auckland; five men, 65, 74 (two), 75 (two), and two women, 66, 72, at Wellington; ten men, 65, 66, 67, 71 (three), 73, 80, 85, and two women, 72, 75, at Christchurch; and nine men, 67, 69 (two), 70, 71 (two), 75, 76, 83, and two women, 76, 79, at Dunedin.
