Notice to Mariners No. 14 of 1908.
Marine Department,
Wellington, 27th February, 1908.
THE following Notices to Mariners, received from the
Board of Trade, London, are published for general
information.
J. A. MILLAR.
GENERAL NOTICES.—SIGNALS FROM H.M. SHIPS.
SEVERAL instances having been reported recently in which
merchant vessels have omitted to answer signals made to
them by H.M. ships, the Board of Trade desire to call the
attention of masters to the importance to merchant vessels
of answering signals made by warships and of practising
communicating with warships.
Masters are reminded that when the red ensign is hoisted
on a warship it means that the warship wishes to communi-
cate with a merchant vessel. Sept., 1907.
EASTERN ARCHIPELAGO, ETC.
MAKASSAR.—The occ. white lt. every 20 secs., elev. 25 ft.
above H.W., exh. from a black frame, in 5° 8¾' S., 119° 23¼' E.,

a R. of 10 miles. Jan.

altered as follows. They are made from a mast in front of
the Water Police Station (22° 18' N., 114° 10' E.) at Kaulung
Pt., but do not necessarily imply that bad weather is ex-
pected at Hong Kong: 1. A cone, pt. up, indics. a typhoon
to the N. of Hong Kong. 2. A cone, pt. up, and drum
below, indics. a typhoon to the N.E. of Hong Kong. 3. A

more than 300 miles away from the colony. Black sigs.
indic. that the centre is believed to be less than 300 miles
away from the colony. The above sigs. will, as heretofore,
be hoisted only when typhoons exist in such positions or are
moving in such directions that information regarding them
is considered to be of importance to the colony or to shipping
leaving the harb. These sigs. are repeated at the Harb.
Office, H.M.S. "Tamar," Green Isl. sig.-mast, and the flag-
staff on the premises of the Hong Kong and Kaulung Wharf
and Godown Company at Kaulung. Urgent Sig.—In addi-
tion to the above, when it is expected that the wind may in-
crease to full typhoon force at any moment, the following
urgent sig. will be made at the Water Police Station, and re-
peated at the Harb. Office: Three explosive bombs, at in-
tervals of 10 secs. A black cross will be hoisted at the same
time, superior to the other shapes. Night Sigs.—The follow-

sigs. at sunset, and will, when necessary, be altered during
the night. Supplementary Warnings.—For the benefit of
native vessels and passing ocean vessels, a cone will be exh.
at each of the following stations during the time that any of
the above day sigs. are hoisted in the harb.: Gap Rock,
Waglan, Stanley, Cape Collinson, Aberdeen, Sau Ki Wan,
Sai Kung, Sha Tau Kok, Tai Po. This will indic. that there
is a depression somewhere in the China Sea, and that a
storm-warning is hoisted in the harb. Further details can
always be given to ocean vessels, on demand, by sig. from
the lt.-hs. Jan.
HONG HAI BAY.—Information has been received respect-
ing the depths in the chans. into Sam chau Inlet, as follows:
(a.) The chan. between Hsi hu (Entr.) Isl. (22° 41' N.,
114° 59' E.), and Wia chia (outer bank) has narrowed con-
siderably by the shifting to the srd. and wrd. of the srn. end
of outer bank; there are now depths of from 21 ft. to 26 ft.
in it. (b.) The chan. wrd. of Nei chia (inner bank) has now
a least depth off Tu ti chueh of 9 ft. in it, and the chan.
generally is shoaler than shown on the charts. (c.) The
chan. erd. of Nei chia between Hsiying tu and Tung ching
chueh has deepened, and there are depths of from 40 ft. to
50 ft. srd. of Tung ching chueh. At the srn. junction of
chans. erd. and wrd. of Nei chia there are depths of from
21 ft. to 27 ft. at L.W. The outer and inner banks break
heavily at L.W., even in very light S.-ely. winds. Jan.

10° 32¼' S., 142° 4½' E., about 5 miles N. 79° W. from Quoin
Pt., Goode Isl., and marked E.D. on the charts, in Prince of
Wales Chan. This rk. was originally reported as being
seen only, and no soundings taken over it, it is considered
that it does not exist, and it has therefore been erased from
the charts. Jan.
WRN. ENTR.—An unsucc. search has been made for the
shoal reported in approx. 10° 37¾' S., 141° 34¼' E., and
marked P.D. on the charts, in the wrn. entrance to Torres
Strait. As this shoal has prev. been searched for by a sur-
veying-vessel without finding any indic. of danger, it has been
decided to place E.D. against it on the charts, with the note,
"Unsuccessfully searched for by 'Paluma,' 1893, 'Fan-
tome,' 1907." Jan.

142° 42' W., at the landing-place of the village. This lt. is
only exh. when a vessel is in sight. As the exact position of
this lt. is not given, the name "Tupapati, lt. shown when
ship is sighted," has been placed on the chart against
Hikueru Isl. Jan.
