Notice fixing Closing-hours of Hairdressers’ Shops in the Borough of Palmerston North under the Shops and Offices Act.

WHEREAS a requisition in writing, signed by a majority of the occupiers of all the hairdressers’ shops in the Borough of Palmerston North, has been forwarded to me, desiring that all hairdressers’ shops in the borough shall be closed at the hour of 6.30 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, and at the hour of 10 p.m. on Saturdays, with the exception of Spring Show week, and from 23rd December to 31st December inclusive; the hour of closing on the above-mentioned dates to be 10 p.m.; and that on the eve of any special holiday, in pursuance of section 16, the hour of closing to be at 8.30 p.m.: And whereas the Borough Council of Palmerston North has certified that the signatures to such requisition of hairdressers represent the total number of the occupiers of all hairdressers’ shops within the Borough of Palmerston North:

Now, therefore, I, John Andrew Millar, the Minister of Labour, in pursuance of section 21 of “The Shop and Offices Act, 1904,” and section 5 of “The Shops and Offices Act Amendment Act, 1905,” do hereby direct that from and after the 17th day of February, 1908, all hairdressers’ shops in the Borough of Palmerston North shall be closed in accordance with such requisition. (The weekly half-holiday is on Wednesday, from 1 o’clock in the afternoon.)

Notice of Half-holiday (for Boys under Eighteen Years of Age and Women) in the Borough of Pahiatua under the Factories Act Amendment Act, 1907, Section 15.

WHEREAS a poll of the electors of the Borough of Pahiatua has been taken on a proposal that the weekly half-holiday provided for by section 33 of “The Factories Act, 1901,” should be allowed in that borough on the same day as the day appointed as the statutory closing-day for shops in that borough: And whereas a majority of the votes given at such poll were in favour of the said proposal:

Now, in pursuance of the provisions of subsection (2), section 15, of the Factories Act Amendment Act, 1907, I, John Andrew Millar, Minister of Labour, hereby give notice that on and after the 17th day of February, 1908, the half-holiday (for boys under eighteen years of age and women) under “The Factories Act, 1901,” shall be allowed in the Borough of Pahiatua on the same day as that appointed from time to time as the statutory closing-day for shops in the said borough, instead of on Saturday.

Notice of Half-holiday (for Boys under Eighteen Years of Age and Women) in the Borough of Timaru under the Factories Act Amendment Act, 1907, Section 15.

WHEREAS a poll of the electors of the Timaru Borough has been taken on a proposal that the weekly half-holiday provided for by section 33 of “The Factories Act, 1901,” should be allowed in that borough on the same day as the day appointed as the statutory closing-day for shops in that borough: And whereas a majority of the votes given at such poll were in favour of the said proposal:

Now, therefore, in pursuance of the provisions of subsection (2) of section 15 of the Factories Act Amendment Act, 1907, I, John Andrew Millar, Minister of Labour, hereby give notice that on and after the 17th day of February, 1908, the half-holiday (for boys under eighteen years of age and women) under “The Factories Act, 1901,” shall be allowed in the Borough of Timaru on the same day as that appointed from time to time as the statutory closing-day for shops in the said borough, instead of on Saturday.

IN pursuance of the power and authority conferred upon me by section 2 of “The Towns Main Streets Act, 1902,” I, Robert McNab, Minister of Lands, do hereby authorise the laying-off of Emily and Ward Streets, in the Township of Halstead, Hawke’s Bay Land District, of a width of not less than 66 ft. each, instead of 99 ft. as prescribed by section 17 of “The Land Act, 1892.”

REGULATIONS UNDER WHICH COMMISSIONS IN THE ARMY MAY BE OBTAINED BY UNIVERSITY CANDIDATES, 1907.

[N.B.—Officers appointed to Commissions in the Army may, in case of voluntary retirement from the Army, be called upon, as a condition of receiving the full rates of retired pay, to serve for a time in the Militia.]

  1. Commissions in the Cavalry, the Royal Artillery, the Infantry, Indian Army, and the Army Service Corps will be granted each half-year on the nomination of recognised universities, or of groups of recognised universities, as indicated hereafter, to those candidates who have fulfilled certain conditions of academic and military qualification.*

  2. Subject to such additions or alterations as the Army Council may from time to time determine, the following is the list of recognised universities, arranged as units for purposes of nomination:—

(a.) The University of Oxford.
(b.) " " Cambridge.
(c.) " " Dublin.
(d.) " " London.
(e.) The Universities of Scotland.
(1.) The Victoria University of Manchester.
The University of Liverpool.
Leeds.
(f.) { (2.) " " Durham.
" " Birmingham.
" " Wales.
The Royal University of Ireland.
(g.) Such chartered universities in the Colonies as have established courses of military instruction approved by the Army Council.

For the number and distribution of commissions between the nominating units or groups, see paragraph 12.

  1. Each university, or group of universities, in the United Kingdom will appoint a nomination Board, to which the
  • Candidates selected for the Indian Army will, in the first place, be gazetted as 2nd Lieutenants in the Unattached List of the British Army under the conditions set forth in the pamphlet “Information regarding Appointment, Promotion, Pay, &c., in His Majesty’s Indian Army.”
