Island. The beacon on Greentop Island in one with the northern extremity of the northernmost Rachael Island, bearing N. 68° W. true (W. ⅝ S. mag.), clears the south-eastern end of this shoal.
Two shoal areas lie to the eastward of Ellinor Rock, one bearing S. 69° E. true (E. ⅝ N. n’ly mag.), distant 1,400 yards, has depths of 7 fathoms over it; the other bearing S. 47° E. true (E.S.E. ¾ E. mag.), distant 1,200 yards, has depths of 8½ fathoms.
Coming from the southward a channel with over 20 fathoms exists to the eastward of Holland Island, with the lower shoulder on the eastern slope of Mount Mission just open to the westward of the trees on the extremity of Casey Point, bearing N. 1° W. true (N.N.W. ⅝ W. w’ly mag.).
At night, after clearing the eastern side of Holland Island, a course can be steered for Barrett Rock red gas buoy, which will lead up in 20 fathoms.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA.—GULF ST. VINCENT.
Outer Harbour-works.
Masters of vessels, pilots, and others are hereby notified that while the dredger is working in the channel on or near the line of No. 2 lead, such dredger will, upon the approach of vessels, either inward or outward bound, always move to the south side of the cutting, provided that the vessels give the signal mentioned in Notice to Mariners No. 27 of 1906 when at the occulting buoy and No. 3 beacon respectively. The dredger will therefore always show the same signals—viz., a red ball by day and a red light under white by night, indicating that she must be left on the starboard side inward and the port hand outward.
This affects Admiralty Charts Nos. 2389A and B., 1750, and 1752.

Masters of vessels and others are informed that the correct position of the reef mentioned in Notice to Mariners No. 10 of 1907 is lat. 10° 59′ 40″ S., and long. 132° 14′ 10″ E.
This affects Admiralty Chart No. 1042.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA.—SPENCER GULF.
Masters of vessels and others are warned that it has been reported that a spar on end, and showing about 1 ft. above water, exists about 10½ miles E. by S. from the entrance-buoy, Franklin Harbour.
Lat. 33° 53′ S., long. 137° 11′ E.
This spar is possibly a mast of a submerged vessel, and is a danger to navigation.
This affects Admiralty Chart No. 2389B.

Notice fixing Closing-hours of Ironmongers’ Shops in the City of Wellington under the Shops and Offices Act.
WHEREAS a requisition in writing, signed by a majority of the occupiers of all the ironmongers’ shops in the City of Wellington, has been forwarded to me, desiring that all such shops in the city shall be closed not later than 6 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, and not later than 9 p.m. on Saturdays: And whereas the Wellington City Council has certified that the signatures to such requisition of ironmongers represent a majority of the occupiers of all such shops within the City of Wellington:
Now, therefore, I, John Andrew Millar, the Minister of Labour, in pursuance of section 21 of “The Shops and Offices Act, 1904,” and section 5 of “The Shops and Offices Act Amendment Act, 1905,” do hereby direct that from and after the 18th day of November, 1907, all ironmongers’ shops in the City of Wellington shall be closed in accordance with such requisition. (The weekly half-holiday is on Wednesday from 1 o’clock in the afternoon.)

Examination for Mine-managers’ and Battery Superintendents’ Certificates.

WRITTEN and oral examinations of candidates for certificates as First- and Second-class Mine-managers and Battery Superintendents under “The Mining Act, 1905,” and First- and Second-class Mine-managers under “The Coal-mines Act, 1905,” will be held on Tuesday, the 21st January, 1908, and following days, at the Thames, Waihi, Reefton, and Dunedin. All applications, with necessary certificates, and fee of £1 by post-office order, should be addressed to “The Secretary, Board of Examiners under the Mining Act [or Coal-mines Act], Wellington,” and must be received on or before the 21st December, 1907. Forms of application may be obtained at any School of Mines, and from Inspectors of Mines.

AN examination of candidates for certificates as dredgemasters, under “The Mining Act, 1905,” will be held on Tuesday, the 28th January, 1908, at Greymouth and Dunedin. All applications, with necessary certificates, and fee of £1 by post-office order, should be addressed to “The Secretary, Board of Examiners under the Mining Act, Wellington,” and must be received on or before the 3rd January, 1908. Forms of application may be obtained from Inspectors of Mines, Westport and Dunedin.
