Specific Febrile or Zymotic Diseases.—The deaths for September at the four centres and suburbs numbered 37 in this class, being 13·21 per cent. of the total mortality. Whooping-cough was fatal at Auckland, 8 deaths; at Wellington, 3 deaths; and at Christchurch, 1 death. Measles caused 9 deaths, all at Wellington; scarlet fever 1 death at the same city. Influenza is observed at Auckland, 1 death; Wellington, 3; and Dunedin, 3. Diphtheria was fatal at Auckland, 1 death, and Wellington, 2. Typhoid fever shows 1 death at Auckland, and 1 at Christchurch. Diarrhœa contributed 3 deaths—2 at Christchurch, and 1 at Dunedin. Thus Wellington suffered the most mortality, amounting to 18 deaths in the class, Auckland came next with 11 deaths, while Christchurch and Dunedin had only 4 each.
Constitutional Diseases.—48 deaths occurred at the four centres, or 17·14 per cent. of the total from all causes. Mortality from tubercular diseases was very high, including 14 deaths from phthisis, 5 from tubercular meningitis, and 7 from tuberculosi, &c. Cancer caused 18 deaths. These with 4 others complete the total.
Local Diseases.—Of 155 deaths, 22 were from diseases of the nervous system, 42 of the circulatory (heart-disease, &c.), and 50 of the respiratory system. These last include a large number of deaths from bronchitis, 22, and pneumonia, 24. From diseases of the digestive system there were 26 deaths; of the lymphatic, 2; of the urinary, 11; and reproductive system, 2.
Violent Deaths.—Of 6 deaths, 3 were the result of falls, 1 of burns, and 2 of suffocation. All were accidental.
The subjoined table shows the mortality for the last two months at each of the four centres from six principal specific febrile or zymotic diseases, and also the deaths from certain inflammatory diseases of the lungs. These causes of death have been distinguished from the others of the classes to which they belong as being the most important special diseases which give rise to sudden increases in the death-rates of towns, and the prevalence of which is closely connected with sanitary condition and climatic influence of the season on health.
