HOWICK TOWNSHIP ROAD BOARD.

Uxbridge Special-rating District.—Result of Poll.

THE following is the result of a poll taken on the 24th November, 1906, on the proposal to borrow a loan of £275, under “The Local Bodies’ Loans Act, 1901,” and the amendments thereto, for the purpose of grading, forming, and metalling Uxbridge Street, Township of Howick: For the proposal, 13; against the proposal, nil; informal, nil.

As the total number of valid votes recorded in favour of the proposal exceeds three-fifths of the total number of valid votes recorded at the poll, I hereby declare the proposal carried.

New Zealand International Exhibition, 1906.—Minerals Court.

Mines Department,
Wellington, 30th July, 1906.

A GOLD medal and fifty guineas, a silver medal and twenty-five guineas, and a bronze medal and ten guineas will be awarded by the Mines Department for essays on the present condition and future prospects of the mineral resources of New Zealand, and the best means of fostering their development.

In judging the merits of the essays preference will be given to those which are of a practical character.

The essays must be sent in to the Under-Secretary for Mines, Wellington, signed with a motto, and accompanied by a sealed envelope containing the author’s name and address, on or before 1st December, 1906.

The essays will be submitted to a Board of three persons (to be hereafter appointed), on whose decision the above prizes will be awarded.

Note.—“Mineral” means any metal or mineral, and includes petroleum and other mineral oils.

GULF OF ST. VINCENT.—OUTER HARBOUR, PORT ADELAIDE.

MASTERS of vessels, pilots, and others are hereby informed that, owing to the progress of deepening operations at the North Bank, Port Adelaide River, the black buoy thereon has been removed, and its position is now occupied by the dredger.

No. 16 beacon light will be temporarily exhibited from the reflecting beacon until it can be shown from the position it is to occupy permanently, as to which a further notice will be issued.

This affects Admiralty Charts 2389A, 2389B, 1750, and 1752.

SPENCER GULF.—TIPARA LIGHTHOUSE.

Notice is hereby given that during the prevalence of fog or mist a gong will be sounded at the above-mentioned lighthouse for a period of thirty (30) seconds in duration and at intervals of five minutes.

The sound will be audible in ordinary weather for a distance of three (3) miles.

This affects Admiralty Chart No. 2389B.

ALTERATION IN MARKS, SANDY STRAIT.

Notice is hereby given that, on and after the 7th proximo, the red buoy on the long middle bank off Woody Island will be shifted two (2) cables’ length to the northward, and the red sector of Woody Island lower light altered to cut outside the buoy on a bearing of S. 46° W. The course from the nun buoy will now be E. ⅜ S., instead of E. ¼ S. as shown on Admiralty chart.

Chart affected: No. 3110; “Australia Directory,” Vol. ii.

Notice fixing Closing-hours of Grocers’ Shops in the Borough of Waimate under the Shops and Offices Act.

WHEREAS a requisition in writing, signed by a majority of the occupiers of all the shops in the grocery trade in the Borough of Waimate, has been forwarded to me, desiring that all such shops in the borough shall be closed at 6 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, at 1 p.m. on Thursdays (the weekly half-holiday), and at 9 p.m. on Saturdays: And whereas the Waimate Borough Council has certified that the signatures to such requisition represent a majority of the occupiers of all the shops in the trade mentioned in the borough:

Now, therefore, I, James McGowan, acting for and on behalf of the Minister of Labour, in pursuance of section 21 of “The Shops and Offices Act, 1904,” and section 5 of “The Shops and Offices Act Amendment Act, 1905,” do hereby direct that from and after the 3rd day of December, 1906, all the shops mentioned in the Borough of Waimate shall be closed in accordance with such requisition.
