passed an examination not essentially different from the Class D examination in those subjects.

  1. Any exemptions from examination, or concessions granted to candidates in respect of subjects for the Class D examination, shall apply equally to the corresponding subjects of Group I in the examination for Class C.

  2. Candidates may secure exemption from examination for Class C in any subject of Groups IV, V, and VI by producing the Second Stage certificate of the Board of Education, South Kensington, London, or the certificate of the City and Guilds of London Institute, for that subject, or for a subject of cognate character that in the judgment of the Inspector-General of Schools is a fair equivalent.

  3. Exemption from examination in any subject for Class C may be obtained by passing in that subject at a degree examination of the University of New Zealand.

  4. Candidates that, at the Junior Scholarship Examination of the University of New Zealand, have obtained “credit” shall not be required to take at the examination for Class C the subjects in which they may be shown to have gained not less than 45 per cent. of the possible marks at the Scholarship Examination.

  5. Candidates that have passed the Civil Service Senior Examination shall not be required to pass again for Class C in the subjects in which they have already passed at the Senior Examination.

  6. Teachers that already hold certificates of a lower grade shall, upon passing any part of the further examination required for Class C, be entitled, on making due application to the Inspector-General of Schools, to have a record of their success endorsed upon their certificates.

  7. The entrance fee for the Class C examination in the subjects of Groups II to VI, or in any section of them, is the sum of one pound sterling, payable in the manner notified in clause 16 of these regulations. For examination in the subjects of Group I the entrance fee is ten shillings, unless the examination taken is in those subjects only, when the entrance fee payable for the examination is one pound.

  8. The following are the subjects of examination for Class C:—

Compulsory Subjects.

(1.) Reading.
(2.) Writing.
(3.) Arithmetic.
(4.) Vocal Music.
(5.) Drawing.
(6.) Elementary Human Physiology.
(7.) Methods of Teaching.

Group II—
(8.) Principles and History of Education.
(9.) English Language and Literature.

Optional Subjects.

Group III—
(10.) Greek.
(11.) Latin.
(12.) French.
(13.) German.
(14.) Italian.
(15.) Spanish.
(16.) Maori.
(17.) Pure Mathematics.

Group IV—
(18.) Mechanics and Hydrostatics.
(19.) Heat and Light.
(20.) Magnetism and Electricity.
(21.) Chemistry.
(22.) Physiography.
(23.) Geology.
(24.) Zoology.
(25.) Botany.
(26.) Physiology and the Structure of the Body.
(27.) General Agriculture.
