REFERRING to the despatch of the 25th June, 1906, published in the New Zealand Gazette No. 69, of the 16th August, 1906, the following despatch, dated the 23rd August, 1906, and enclosure are published for general information.

MY LORD,—With reference to my despatch “General” of the 9th February last, I have the honour to transmit to you two copies of a table showing the special periods of Military History selected for the examination of (a) Officers of the Regular Forces for promotion, and (b) Candidates for admission to the Staff College.

Special Campaigns, &c., selected for Army Examinations.

Examinations. Date. Special Campaigns, &c. Remarks.
Captains and Lieutenants of the Regular Forces for Promotion. (Alternative papers are set. Officers attending for the first time are advised to take up the new campaign. Those who fail may then take up the same campaign again at the following examination.) See King’s Regulations, Appendix VII. November, 1906 First Paper:— General Questions on the Peninsular Campaign, from March, 1811, to the end of October, 1813. Second Paper:— Salamanca, 1812, from the surprise of Almaraz in May to the occupation of Madrid in August. Was also set in May, 1906.
First Paper:— General Questions on the Peninsular Campaign, from March, 1811, to the end of October, 1813. Second Paper:— Special Campaign—Vittoria, 1813, from May to the end of June, 1813. Campaign set for the first time.
First Paper:— General Questions on the Peninsular Campaign, from March, 1811, to the end of October, 1813. Second Paper:— Special Campaign—Vittoria, 1813, from May to the end of June, 1813. Was also set in November, 1906.
May, 1907 First Paper:— General Questions on the Campaign in the Peninsular and the South of France, from the middle of May, 1813, to the end of the War. Second Paper:— The Campaign in the Peninsular and the South of France, from 12th July, 1813 (the day Marshal Soult took over command from King Joseph), till the end of the War. Campaign set for the first time.
First Paper:— General Questions on the Campaign in the Peninsular and the South of France, from the middle of May, 1813, to the end of the War. Second Paper:— The Campaign in the Peninsular and the South of France, from 12th July, 1813 (the day Marshal Soult took over command from King Joseph), till the end of the War. Was also set in May, 1907.
November, 1907 The Campaign to be set for the first time will be announced in Army Orders of January, 1907.
Admission to the Staff College. August, 1907 First Paper:— As laid down in the Staff College Regulations, 1905, page 6, with special reference to the Campaign of 1882 in Egypt. Second Paper:— Napoleon’s Campaign in Poland, 1806–1807, from the beginning of December, 1806, to the signing of the Armistice on the 21st June, 1807.
  • No detailed questions will be set with reference to the action of the Spanish and Portuguese armies, and no question of any kind will be set with reference to these armies when their action had no bearing on that of the British troops.
